Summer mechanical engineering interns support submarine mechanical component design through strength analyses, FEA, requirements development, supplier oversight, non-conformance evaluation, and manufacturing and testing activities. Interns collaborate with engineers, suppliers, shipyard personnel, and Navy stakeholders on projects supporting Columbia and Virginia Class submarines. The role is on-site in Groton or New London, Connecticut, requires at least eight weeks, and may require obtaining a Secret clearance.

Leads engineering risk identification and mitigation for nuclear and non-nuclear submarine construction activities. Facilitates risk meetings, reviews formal assessments, supports construction learning sessions, oversees engineering surveillance of construction and testing, and coordinates senior management review teams. Requires collaboration across shipyard planning, operations, quality, and testing organizations, plus the ability to interpret piping, instrumentation, and mechanical drawings.

Supports submarine manufacturing operations by troubleshooting production issues, evaluating process capability, developing new manufacturing processes, and implementing Lean and continuous-improvement initiatives. Works directly with operations leadership and production control to improve safety, quality, cost, productivity, and schedule performance. Analyzes production metrics, resolves constraints, recommends equipment and technology improvements, and establishes stable, repeatable processes on the manufacturing floor.

Supervise a 17-person ship control engineering and technician group developing and supporting safety-critical submarine electronics, Fly-By-Wire components, and industrial sales products. Lead employee competency development, field repair and modification documentation, engineering design model construction and installation, technical integration, and block-build transitions. Coordinate with shipyards, facilities, engineering disciplines, and customers while managing quality, budgets, schedules, workflows, and technical problem resolution.

Oversee supplier quality throughout procurement, including capability assessments, quality management system reviews, process audits, product inspections, defect evaluation, trend analysis, root-cause investigations, and corrective actions. Travel to supplier facilities to assess manufacturing and quality practices and verify purchase order compliance. Collaborate with supply chain teams to ensure critical submarine components meet Navy and Electric Boat quality requirements.

Develop, integrate, test, certify, deploy, and support ship control systems for U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines. Responsibilities may include requirements definition, interface management, hardware/software integration, simulation and modeling, component qualification, lab development, system testing, submarine installation, certification support, fleet troubleshooting, and updated software and hardware deployment.

Supply Chain interns support analysts, buyers, planners, and systems coordinators across procurement, supplier management, purchase orders, inventory control, audit and compliance, government property, program management, and supply chain planning. The internship provides mentorship and practical experience in submarine-industry operations. Interns must commit to at least eight weeks, work 40 hours weekly, and be onsite at an assigned Rhode Island or Connecticut location.

Develops configuration-controlled dimensional control documents and procedures for submarine construction. Coordinates with metrology technicians to select tooling, assess survey conditions, conduct three-dimensional measurements, and process as-built data for shipyard decisions, fabrication, alignment, machining, and certification. Interfaces with engineering, operations, ship management, vendors, shipyards, and customers while maintaining safety and accuracy. Occasional travel is required.

Installs, configures, secures, and maintains enterprise network infrastructure across multiple campuses. Responsibilities include managing Cisco switches, Palo Alto firewalls, routers, TACLANE encryptors, campus fiber projects, vulnerability patching, and cybersecurity initiatives. The engineer troubleshoots copper and fiber connectivity, implements government configurations, leads cross-team network projects, and supports network availability. The role is fully on-site, requires frequent walking and local travel, occasional travel to secondary locations, and eligibility for a DoD Top Secret clearance.

Summer interns support program and engineering planning through schedule development and maintenance, network health metrics, database creation, data modeling, reporting, manpower planning, and resolving schedule-impacting changes. Assignments involve planners, data coordinators, and data modelers under senior staff guidance. The role is full-time for at least eight weeks, on-site at a Connecticut or Rhode Island location, and requires housing and reliable transportation.
