Provides administrative and operational support for jury management, including processing juror questionnaires, evaluating excusal and postponement requests, answering inquiries, coordinating juror check-in and courtroom assignments, preparing legal and payment documentation, maintaining records, and supporting purchasing and accounts payable activities.

Performs civil and criminal legal work for the County Counsel for Defense, including court representation, trials, hearings, arraignments, legal research, case evaluation, motions, legal document drafting, witness examination, negotiations, and client communication. The Attorney 1 works under general or direct supervision, progressively assuming greater responsibility while adhering to applicable laws, judicial procedures, and departmental policies.

Performs civil and criminal legal work for the Public Defender, including client representation, court appearances, trials, hearings, legal research, document drafting, motion responses, oral arguments, witness examination, case evaluation, and coordination with investigators and legal support staff.

Manages the Counsel for Defense Department, including personnel, policies, operations, budgets, caseloads, training, and service quality. Supervises attorneys, investigators, and support staff while maintaining effective indigent defense representation. Handles selected criminal defense cases, including capital cases, advises on complex litigation and defense strategy, represents the department before justice-system agencies, and ensures compliance with applicable laws, professional standards, and county policies.

Directs and administers the Spokane County Public Defender’s Office, overseeing staff, policies, operations, budgets, compliance, training, caseloads, and external legal relationships. Supervises attorneys and administrative personnel, manages indigent defense resources, resolves sensitive issues, and represents the office in legal and community settings. Also provides direct trial-level representation for selected indigent clients in criminal and civil matters.

Provides technical and clerical support for Detention Services, including maintaining inmate records, files, rosters, correspondence, and legal forms. Coordinates inmate transports and court-related appointments, manages mail and release procedures, and handles phones and public inquiries. Performs cash accounting, inmate money transactions, inventory, data entry, spreadsheet work, and general office duties while maintaining confidentiality and accuracy.

Performs legal research, drafts and edits pleadings, motions and trial documents, files orders, tracks discovery and payments, maintains attorney files and schedules, and interacts with police, witnesses, victims, and agencies to support prosecutors and public defenders in pretrial and trial preparation.

Entry-level attorney responsible for prosecuting or representing the county in civil or criminal matters. Duties include legal research, drafting filings, courtroom advocacy, interviewing witnesses, managing case logistics, and coordinating with investigators and staff. May handle cases independently or under supervision and can be reassigned across office divisions.

Developmental internship for active-duty service members eligible for DoD SkillBridge. Participants receive supervised on-the-job training across Spokane County departments (Parks, Golf & Recreation and Medical Examiner), performing patrols, groundskeeping, visitor education, forensic support, autopsy assistance, report writing, and other entry- to intermediate-level tasks while gaining professional skills and mentorship.

Lead development and execution of county-wide communications, marketing, public relations, and community engagement strategies supporting the BOCC and CEO. Advise leadership on complex issues, craft policy-related messaging, manage media relations, direct public outreach and emergency communications, oversee web and digital content, partner with policy advisors, and lead and mentor assigned staff to ensure consistent, transparent public messaging.
