Develops and executes media relations and public relations strategies to promote the organization, secure media coverage, manage rapid-response communications, and position it as a thought leader. Responsibilities include journalist relationship management, press releases, spokesperson preparation, communications planning, event and conference PR, presentation oversight, media monitoring, performance tracking, and crisis communications support. The role collaborates with legal, policy, program, leadership, and communications teams.

Represents Michigan journalists and news organizations in litigation involving public records, judicial access, freedom of information, media law, and First Amendment rights. Provides legal advice, drafts court filings and amicus briefs, conducts journalist trainings, responds to legal inquiries, collaborates with stakeholders, and may supervise junior attorneys and fellows.

Leads the organization’s external communications strategy, brand positioning, media relations, digital presence, executive messaging, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy communications. Oversees Content, Digital, and Media teams; manages budgets, vendors, partnerships, and communications policies; and advises the Executive Team. The role develops messaging, campaigns, media opportunities, internal and external communications, and strategies that increase visibility and advance the organization’s mission.

Design and execute strategic litigation protecting press freedom and journalists’ newsgathering rights. Represent journalists and news organizations in state and federal court, handle pleadings, appeals, discovery, negotiations, and client advocacy. Develop impact litigation, collaborate with policy and amicus teams, supervise junior attorneys, fellows, and interns, and educate journalists through legal trainings.

Legal fellows monitor media-law developments, support First Amendment and freedom-of-information litigation, prepare legal memoranda, motions, discovery, briefs, and oral-argument materials, respond to journalist inquiries, contribute to amicus and policy work, and write website and publication content.

The Michigan LLI Attorney will represent journalists in legal matters, provide counsel on newsgathering rights, and conduct trainings.
