Frequently Asked Questions

Organizational Mission

UL Solutions puts its mission of working for a safer world into practice through product testing, safety certification, sustainability services, community engagement and employee-led technical innovation. Across engineering, software and advisory work, employees can point to concrete examples where their day-to-day responsibilities directly support safer products, safer workplaces and more sustainable technologies.

  • Safety testing has direct real-world impact: UL Solutions engineers evaluate and certify products and components used in areas such as construction, industrial equipment, electrical systems and energy storage. A functional safety senior project engineer said each product assessment contributes “another piece to the larger puzzle of creating a safer world,” while an engineer project associate connected construction-material certification directly to protecting workers, including members of her own family.
  • Emerging technologies are made safer before they scale: UL Solutions applies safety science to new and complex technologies including hydrogen and battery systems. A project engineer in Japan supports certification for hazardous-location and hydrogen-related equipment, helping customers meet international standards, while another engineer developed a new lithium-ion battery testing method and uses AI-assisted failure detection to improve lab safety.
  • Sustainability services extend the mission beyond compliance: UL Solutions helps customers advance renewable energy, circularity, sustainable buildings and responsible supply chains through testing, certification, data tools and advisory services. Its sustainability “handprint” includes programs such as Zero Waste to Landfill Validation, product sustainability certifications and UL 360 software for ESG data management.
  • Employees contribute to local communities as part of the mission: UL Solutions gives eligible employees two paid volunteer days each year and supports community initiatives in areas including STEM education, public safety, disaster relief and local nonprofit partnerships. In 2025, 2,348 employees used volunteer time and logged 12,717 hours of service.
  • External signals:
    • Mission-driven workplace: Employees highlight UL Solutions’ public-safety mission as one of the most positive aspects of the company. (Glassdoor)
    • Purpose and impact: Employees cite contributing to a safer world and making a positive difference as reasons they value their work. (Comparably)
    • Community recognition: UL Solutions has received recognition including the 2025 Habitat Hero Award for its work with Habitat for Humanity. (Habitat for Humanity)

Bottom line: UL Solutions’ mission is visible in the work itself, from certifying safer products and advancing cleaner technologies to helping customers improve sustainability and giving employees structured opportunities to support their communities.

Societal Impact & Community Engagement

UL Solutions makes a difference through a combination of community investment, employee volunteerism and safety and sustainability work that reaches far beyond its own operations. Its impact spans local nonprofit partnerships, STEM and disaster-relief support, and global services that help customers make products, workplaces and supply chains safer and more sustainable.

  • Employees are given time to support local communities: UL Solutions provides eligible employees with two paid volunteer days each year and encourages them to use that time with nonprofit organizations addressing local needs. In 2025, 2,348 employees used volunteer time and collectively logged 12,717 hours of service, with participation rising year over year.
  • Community giving is tied to specific social needs: UL Solutions directs corporate giving toward public safety, security and sustainability research, STEM education, local and global community support and disaster relief. Its Community Impact Champions also work with nonprofit partners to identify local priorities so community programs reflect real needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Global partnerships extend the company’s reach: UL Solutions partners with organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Red Cross, while teams also participate in local service projects and Global Day of Service activities. These partnerships give employees structured ways to connect the company’s mission with community impact.
  • The company’s wider impact comes through customer work: UL Solutions helps organizations improve product safety, energy transition, circularity, sustainable buildings and supply-chain transparency through testing, certification, software and advisory services. Its sustainability portfolio includes programs such as Zero Waste to Landfill Validation and UL 360 ESG software, allowing the company’s impact to scale through the customers and industries it supports.
  • External signals:

Authenticity

UL Solutions demonstrates commitment to its values by embedding Safety, Integrity, Respect and Growth into how employees work, how leaders make decisions and how the company engages with customers and communities. Those values show up in concrete practices around safety, ethics, inclusion, employee development and accountability rather than existing only as statements.

  • Safety is built into daily operations: UL Solutions reinforces its safety mission through formal EHS programs, Stop Work Authority, safety training and risk-management practices across laboratories and field work. Employees are empowered to stop work when conditions are unsafe, while technical safety authorities and regular Safety and Security Moments help make safety a shared responsibility.
  • Integrity is reinforced through clear standards and accountability: All employees are required to complete Standards of Business Conduct training, and UL Solutions reported 100% completion in 2025. Employees can also raise concerns through management, HR, Legal, Internal Audit or the Global Ethics Helpline, with protections against retaliation for good-faith reporting.
  • Respect is reflected in inclusion and collaboration: UL Solutions supports nine Business Resource Groups, a Global Inclusion Ambassador Network and policies intended to create a professional, respectful workplace. Employees also describe cross-functional teamwork built on transparency, shared accountability and openness to different perspectives.
  • Growth is supported through development and internal opportunity: Employees have access to regular career conversations, more than 3,000 technical courses, tuition reimbursement, structured Learning Journeys and leadership development programs. Internal mobility and employee-led career moves reinforce Growth as an active part of the employee experience.
  • External signals:
    • Values-driven culture: Employees describe the company as mission-driven and highlight integrity, collaboration and public safety as cultural strengths. (Comparably)

Bottom line: UL Solutions demonstrates its values through the systems employees interact with every day — from safety and ethics programs to inclusion, development and accountability — making Safety, Integrity, Respect and Growth part of how work gets done.

As more companies try to design better products and reduce waste, sustainability claims are everywhere. Product descriptions now include phrases and labels meant to signal environmental responsibility, but it is not always clear what those claims are based on. Third-party certification indicates a product has undergone rigorous scientific testing and/or exhaustive auditing to prove its compliance with stringent, third-party environmental standards.

This type of review is familiar for consumer products, where testing and certification have long helped explain safety and quality. But as sustainability expectations grow, the same idea is starting to apply to industrial and energy equipment. These products often operate in the background, but they use significant materials and remain in service for many years.

Stephanie Schiller, Senior Technical Manager

While AI won’t spill oil, unchecked energy demands could trigger similar systemic harm: pollution, resource depletion and public health challenges concentrated in vulnerable regions. These parallels remind us that technological progress without sustainability planning can repeat old mistakes that have long-term effects on people and places. To avoid this trajectory, we need solutions that reduce the rising energy needs of AI and the waste it produces without slowing innovation.

UL Solutions Employee Reviews

We do our work so the public doesn’t have to think about whether something is up to safety standards. We make a real difference in people’s lives, often without them even knowing it. That’s such a great mission to have.
