About The Role
The senior manager of engineering owns the delivery and technical health of Grocery TV's engineering team. You will lead a team of approximately six engineers building the backend services, device platform, and applications that power a media network running across 6,500+ stores and tens of thousands of connected devices.
This is a hands-on leadership seat, you are accountable for the team completing committed scope on schedule, at quality; for the standards the codebase is held to; and for the health and growth of the people on your team. You will partner directly with Product to set delivery expectations, plan cycles, and define acceptance criteria, and you will run the team's weekly operating cadence.
Grocery TV runs on EOS. You will own your team's scorecard, quarterly rocks (goals), and issue list, and you will report status weekly to the leadership team.
Responsibilities
People leadership
- Manage team through holding consistent 1:1s with every engineer on the team, hold team members accountable to work progress and output, and support development of team through providing feedback and consistent developmental opportunities
- Own right people, right seats: assess fit, develop strengths, and address gaps directly
- Run quarterly conversations covering performance, growth, and expectations
- Partner with the CTO on hiring, onboarding, and capacity planning
Delivery
- Own that the team ships committed scope on schedule, at quality
- Set and own quarterly goals with clear milestones, deadlines, and distinct owners
- Run the weekly team meetings: keep the scorecard current, prioritize the issue list, and drive issues to resolution
- Report weekly status including goal health, and a concrete recovery plan for anything off track
Technical health
- Participate in code review and hold the bar on architecture and process standards
- Identify, quantify, and manage down technical debt as an ongoing practice rather than a periodic cleanup
- Drive operational excellence through observability, monitoring, and incident follow-up
- Champion testing by example — unit and integration coverage as a default, not an afterthought
Product partnership
- Partner with Product on scope, sequencing, and cycle planning
- Negotiate and hold clear acceptance criteria before work starts
- Translate product intent into technical plans the team can execute against
Requirements / Experience
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years directly managing engineers
- Track record of leading a team of 5–10 engineers delivering production software on a predictable cadence
- Strong technical depth in backend and distributed systems; able to review code, evaluate designs, and push back on architecture decisions with credibility
- Experience owning delivery commitments to a business, including recovering projects that have gone off track
- Demonstrated ability to raise engineering standards on an existing team — testing, code review, observability, or tech debt reduction
- Experience partnering closely with Product on scoping and planning
- Direct, low-ego communication style; comfortable being hard on the problem and easy on the person
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
Nice to have
- Experience with Go, Android, or connected device / IoT fleets at scale
- Experience operating in EOS or a similar structured operating cadence
- Retail media, adtech, or digital signage background
