JOB DESCRIPTION
Provides technical leadership and drives consistency, integrity, and technical quality in the execution of testing performed by staff located at all UL Solutions Laboratories. Is the global technical expert for the assigned skill set(s), including complex data center laboratory disciplines. Represents UL Solutions Laboratories in technical collaborations with Principal Engineers and other Subject Matter Experts. Able to define and advance specialized laboratory capabilities, equipment strategies, and standardized test approaches needed to support emerging data center technologies and requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serves as the expert in one or more laboratory technical skill sets. Provides technical leadership, driving consistency and competency through standardization of testing methods across laboratories. Communicates technical information in a manner that drives clear understanding, consistency, and validity.
  • Identifies coaching, training, competency, and safety-awareness opportunities and focuses on knowledge sharing. Establishes specific criteria for competency skill sets for laboratory staff.
  • Advances global safety through identification of risks and by collaborating with Labs and Operations Leadership to implement risk management strategies. Determines effective ways to build safety into the testing process and leads by example by making safety the number one priority.
  • Stays current on the latest technologies pertaining to skill set responsibilities. Understands and shares new and updated technologies to help the Labs organization prepare for future staff, equipment, and laboratory capability needs.
  • Identifies how industry changes may disrupt testing currently being performed and works with technical and operational leaders to develop consistent responses.
  • Identifies opportunities for process efficiency through digitalization and automation. Assists leaders in driving standardization, reducing testing complexity, and applying Lean principles to increase capacity and generate cost savings by eliminating waste.
  • Participates in the selection process for Regional Laboratory Technical Lead and Designated Laboratory Technical Lead candidates and takes a lead role in their technical development. Develops training with clear learning objectives addressing skill-set-specific criteria.
  • Partners with learning experts to develop creative approaches for training individuals who are primarily hands-on learners.
  • Works with Principal Engineers and other responsible Conformity Assessment Services staff to determine test methods, equipment needs, and skill requirements resulting from changes or additions to technical requirements. May provide support as a technical representative in internal meetings and committees.
  • Reads and follows the UL Solutions Code of Conduct and follows all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program.
  • Generally, fifteen years of directly related experience in the industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and train others. Good writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in English. Speaks credibly in area of own expertise with ability to communicate technical information in a non-technical way.
  • Able to develop and present training materials using a variety of methods (group presentations, video, etc.).
  • Detailed knowledge of UL Solutions Laboratory operations and technical vocabulary common to involved skill sets.
  • Working knowledge of UL basic safety principles.
  • Working knowledge of involved test methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical knowledge in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new or unusual product testing. Working knowledge of involved industry issues, needs and problems.
  • Working knowledge of ULS Conformity Assessment Services, Follow-up Services and Standards development process.
  • Ability to perform as a respected technical resource for peers, management and constituency.
    DATA CENTER KNOWLEDGE:
  • Expert knowledge of data center laboratory evaluation methods, including development and global standardization of test approaches for electrical infrastructure, power conversion, distribution, backup power, cooling-support systems, and mission-critical assemblies.
  • Advanced understanding of high-voltage, DC voltage, high-current, and high-capacity laboratory systems, including safe test architecture, source and load strategy, grounding and bonding requirements, and risk controls for abnormal-condition testing.
  • Ability to define laboratory capability roadmaps for emerging data center technologies, including equipment specifications, facility readiness, staff competency needs, and standardized operating practices across laboratories.
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex test-lab instrumentation and automation, including programmable power sources, power analyzers, data acquisition systems, control integration, thermal mapping, and digital tools that improve repeatability and efficiency.
  • Experience leading design, validation, and troubleshooting of custom laboratory setups for data center applications, including fixtures, controls, safety interlocks, transient-event capture, and setup verification.
  • Ability to collaborate with Principal Engineers, technical leaders, operations leaders, and laboratory teams to translate changing data center standards, technologies, and customer requirements into test methods, equipment plans, and training programs.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes, product standards, and data center frameworks as applied in a laboratory environment, including UL and IEC requirements, ANSI/TIA-942 expectations, and ASHRAE thermal guidance.
