About the team and product

The Operate product engineering team focuses on improving our customers’ day-to-day operations. We build features to help our customers’ employees make human review decisions about how much of a risk their consumer and business accounts pose and then take action on those decisions.

For example, when a person applies for a new credit card from a bank that’s a customer of Alloy, Alloy runs the bank’s automated rules. If the rules determine it needs a human review, the bank’s employee looks at the results, other relevant info, and may also ask the person directly for more info. All that info goes into deciding what should ultimately happen with the person’s credit card application and overall account.

The Operate team works to improve these reviews for our customers’ employees, making sure they’re presented with relevant understandable data and context and that they’re able to take useful actions such as

  • Freeze hijacked bank accounts until the rightful owners can regain control.
  • Release funds for unusual transactions once deemed safe and correct.
  • Protect from fraud ring attacks by triaging, escalating, and resolving alerts.
  • Reporting financial suspicious activity to governments.

These capabilities and more that the Operate team supports are critical to Alloy—they directly affect the balance of protecting our customers from losses from fraud or compliance penalties while increasing how many legitimate consumers and businesses can buy and benefit from our customers’ financial products.

The team consists of 8 engineers as well as a PM, designer, and EM. Like all engineering teams at Alloy, we work all across the Alloy codebase and product and regularly collaborate with other engineering squads and with folks beyond engineering too. Our features cover the full stack, from PostgreSQL through NodeJS and Python API servers (with OpenSearch) up through React/Redux. We build software in two-week Agile sprints. Our deployment pipelines make use of GitHub, CircleCI, Docker, and AWS, among other tools.

We’re looking for someone who

  • Joins us in person at our Manhattan office on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Has a full stack software engineering skillset, ideally in our core stack: React, NodeJS, PSQL (or relatable experience with similar technologies).
  • Builds and ships well-crafted features and supports them.
  • Relentlessly hunts down bugs till the cause is known and the solution is in place.
  • Proactively communicates about their work, both the challenges and successes.
  • Enjoys working on multi-engineer projects—we are a very collaborative team and culture.
  • Can be autonomous for their own projects, including owning delivery dates and writing concrete technical plans from the product vision of UX designers and PMs.
  • Internalizes the “why” behind features, understanding what the users want to be able to do.
  • Has an action-oriented mindset of responsibility: leaving the codebase better than it was, working toward solutions even when a problem isn’t with your or your team’s code, actively helping with on-call incidents and contributing to blameless postmortems after.
  • Takes initiative to improve their own skills as well as finding ways to improve their team or engineering guilds.
  • 4 years of relevant experience recommended.
