Compensation
The anticipated base pay compensation range for these positions is as follows:
  • Senior Software Engineer: $112,900 - $188,100
  • Staff Software Engineer: $134,100 - $223,500
  • Sr Staff Software Engineer: $146,200- $243,600

These roles are eligible for an incentive target of up to 10% (Senior), 15% (Staff) and 20% (Sr Staff) 10-20%, based on the achievement of individual and company performance objectives in accordance with the current terms of the incentive program which are subject to change.

Job Summary
As a Software Engineer at Grainger, you will design, build, test, deploy, and support scalable, reliable, and secure software solutions that align with business needs and technical strategy. You will partner with engineers, architects, product managers, engineering leaders, and other stakeholders across the full software development life cycle. Depending on the level, you will independently deliver complex solutions, lead technical execution for a team, or serve as a technical authority who shapes architecture and engineering direction across teams and domains. At every level, you will remain hands-on, contribute to engineering excellence, and help strengthen the capabilities of others through collaboration, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, configure, test, deploy, and support high-quality software applications, systems, and platforms that are scalable, maintainable, reliable, and secure.
  • Translate business requirements and product needs into effective technical designs and solutions in partnership with product managers, architects, engineers, analysts, engineering leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Apply specialized front-end, back-end, full-stack, platform, or domain expertise based on the needs of the team and product.
  • Contribute to or lead system design and architecture decisions, with scope and influence increasing based on role level and business need.
  • Advance engineering practices, including automated testing, code and design reviews, observability, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), security, performance, and operational resilience.
  • Maintain software in production, monitor system health, and effectively triage and resolve issues.
  • Collaborate through pairing, code reviews, technical discussions, and shared ownership of delivery outcomes.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, share knowledge, and help build a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence.
  • Influence the adoption of practical engineering standards and sensible defaults that support consistent, efficient delivery.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to technical and nontechnical partners.

The required depth and breadth of experience will align to the level of the role: 3+ years for Senior Software Engineer, 5+ years for Staff Software Engineer, and 7+ years for Sr Staff Software Engineer.
