Our Opportunity
Chewy is building a highly AI-focused team within Supply Chain Operations to create products and platforms that help teams work smarter, make better decisions, and automate repetitive work, with the potential to benefit the broader enterprise.
We are seeking a Software Engineer I to help build applications that bring AI into employees' everyday workflows. Our team combines AI, shared knowledge, analytics, workflow automation, and reusable integrations to help employees find information, explore data, and complete tasks while remaining in control.
In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers to develop user interfaces, backend services, and integrations. You will strengthen your software engineering fundamentals, gain hands-on experience building AI-powered products, and contribute to features used by teams across Chewy.
What You'll Do
- Develop, test, and maintain scoped features across user interfaces, backend services, and APIs with guidance from experienced engineers.
- Help build AI-powered experiences for knowledge discovery, analytics, and workflow automation.
- Integrate AI services and enterprise APIs using established patterns for security, human review, and reliable error handling.
- Embrace a builder's mindset: test ideas by building-make, break, and rebuild in pursuit of meaningful, intelligent systems. Fail fast and iterate continuously, incorporating guidance and feedback from experienced engineers.
- Use AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, debugging, and documentation while reviewing, understanding, and testing generated outputs.
- Help evaluate AI features using representative tasks, identify inaccurate or unexpected results, and suggest improvements.
- Collaborate with engineers and product partners to understand requirements, communicate progress, and apply feedback from code reviews.
- Help monitor and troubleshoot applications, building familiarity with production systems and reliable software delivery.
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 1-2 years of software development experience; internships and co-ops count.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Python, Java, or TypeScript, and familiarity with APIs and SQL or NoSQL databases.
- Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, version control, testing, and debugging.
- Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools through work, coursework, or personal projects, with examples of how you reviewed, tested, and improved generated code.
- Hands-on experience building AI-powered systems through work, coursework, or personal projects, and the curiosity to find and frame your own problems to solve.
- Awareness of AI limitations, including inaccurate outputs, and the importance of validating results and protecting sensitive information.
- Ability to complete well-defined tasks with guidance, ask clear questions, incorporate feedback, and collaborate with teammates.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience developing user interfaces with React and TypeScript, or a comparable frontend framework.
- Coursework or projects involving language model APIs, AI-powered applications, or workflow automation.
- Familiarity with prompting, retrieval-augmented generation, tool calling, or evaluating AI-generated responses.
- Exposure to cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, containers, or application monitoring.
- Experience with data processing or analytics, or an interest in supply chain, operations, or enterprise software.
Success in This Role
You deliver well-tested, scoped features with guidance and build increasing independence. You demonstrate an AI-first mindset through hands-on experimentation, thoughtful validation, and practical improvements to your work while strengthening your software engineering fundamentals.
