At Chewy, our mission is to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents and partners, everywhere.
The Role
Job Description:
At Chewy, it is our mission to become the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and our partners vets and service providers alike. Our success is measured by the happiness of the people and pets we serve, not simply by the amount of pet supplies we deliver. That's why we continue to think of outside-the-Chewy-box ways to delight, surprise, and thank our loyal pet lovers!
Our Opportunity:
Chewy is seeking a Software Development Manager to join our Routing Execution team within the Outbound Science and Technology group in Boston, MA. This team is responsible for building and scaling systems that power intelligent order routing; ensuring customers receive their orders quickly, reliably, and cost-effectively.
As an engineering leader, you will operate with a strong sense of ownership over both your team and the systems you build. You will lead an engineering group while remaining close to the technology, guiding the building and implementation of scalable, high-performing solutions. You will collaborate across product, science, and operations teams to deliver results that directly impact client happiness and business outcomes.
This role requires a balance of technical depth, people leadership, and operational excellence. You will be responsible for developing talent, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
What You'll Do:
  • Own delivery and outcomes for your team, ensuring high-quality, timely execution of projects that improve customer experience and operational efficiency
  • Lead and develop a team of engineers (5+), providing coaching, feedback, and growth opportunities aligned with individual career goals
  • Drive technical excellence by guiding system design, making sound architectural decisions, and contributing hands-on when needed
  • Deliver scalable and reliable systems by applying guidelines in distributed systems, cloud-native development, and modular architecture
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards across development, testing, deployment, and operational support
  • Champion operational excellence, including system observability, monitoring, alerting, and continuous performance optimization
  • Dive deep into technical challenges, partnering with engineers to fix complex issues and ensure long-term solutions
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, scientists, and operations collaborators to define requirements and deliver impactful solutions
  • Earn trust and influence collaborators by communicating clearly, making data-driven decisions, and aligning teams around technical strategy and priorities
  • Continuously improve team processes and systems, driving efficiency, scalability, and maintainability

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of experience leading or managing software engineering teams
  • Strong proficiency in a modern programming language such as Java or Python
  • Experience designing and building scalable, distributed systems using cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Strong system design and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs and drive pragmatic decisions
  • Demonstrated ownership of systems or projects, with a track record of delivering results in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to develop and grow engineers through coaching, mentorship, and feedback
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution

Bonus:
  • Experience building systems at eCommerce scale
  • Experience with Spring-based microservices
  • Experience with AWS and cloud-native architectures
  • Experience in supply chain, logistics, or operations research domains
  • Experience building distributed, highly available, and high-performance systems

The base salary range for this role is $149,000 - $225,000.00.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.
Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
