About This Role
The Project Cost Controller is responsible for establishing, implementing and maintaining cost control systems across the SIB project portfolio, and for providing accurate, up-to-date reporting on project expenditure against approved budgets to support effective management decision-making. The role is central to giving the PMO Manager and site leadership visibility of cost trends across all active projects, and to ensuring that spending is properly authorised, coded and tracked throughout each project's lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain project cost codes and budget control frameworks for all approved SIB projects, ensuring alignment with authorized capital expenditure budgets and organizational financial governance requirements.
- Monitor project commitments, actual expenditures, and forecasted costs to completion across the project portfolio, proactively identifying and escalating budget variances and potential cost risks.
- Prepare and deliver monthly project cost reports, variance analyses, and cash flow forecasts to support informed decision-making by the PMO Manager and Finance team.
- Review, verify, and accurately allocate supplier invoices and contractor payment certificates prior to submission for processing, ensuring compliance with approved budgets and contractual obligations.
- Maintain a comprehensive register of project changes and variations, assessing and quantifying the financial impact of proposed scope amendments prior to approval.
- Collaborate closely with the Cost Estimator to validate project sanction estimates and liaise with the Contract Officer on commercial, contractual, and payment-related matters.
- Provide input into the annual budgeting cycle and periodic forecasting exercises for the SIB project portfolio, working in partnership with the PMO Manager to ensure financial plans reflect current project requirements.
- Prepare final project cost reports and close-out documentation upon project completion, ensuring accurate capture and analysis of cost data to support future estimating, budgeting, and project planning activities.
- Support the continuous improvement of project cost management practices by maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring data integrity, and promoting adherence to established policies and procedures.
Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Engineering, Economics, or a related discipline.
- Professional certification such as CIMA/ACCA/ ICA/PMP or related certification is desirable.
- Minimum of five (5) years' progressive experience in project cost control, budgeting and financial management within capital projects, preferably in the mining, construction or heavy industrial sectors.
- Demonstrated proficiency in project cost management and ERP systems such as SAP, Prism, COINS, or similar platforms, complemented by advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities.
- Strong understanding of the capital project lifecycle, including project inception, budget sanctioning, execution, monitoring and project close-out.
- Working knowledge of capital project accounting principles, financial reporting requirements and cost governance practices within a mining or industrial environment is desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial and project cost data accurately.
- High attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accuracy, integrity and quality in financial reporting and cost control activities.
- Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build and maintain productive working relationships across multidisciplinary teams, including Finance, Procurement, Project Management and Contractors.
- Proactive and results-oriented mindset, with the ability to identify, assess and escalate cost risks and budget variances on time.
- Strong planning, coordination, and monitoring capabilities, ensuring effective control of project costs and financial performance throughout the project lifecycle.
