Principal Cloud Developer

Location: Galway, Ireland

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and innovative Principal Cloud Developer to join our growing engineering team in Galway.

This is a senior technical leadership role where you will play a key part in designing, developing, and delivering highly scalable cloud-based solutions while helping to shape the future direction of our technology platforms. You will work alongside architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to solve complex technical challenges and drive innovation across our cloud ecosystem.

As a Principal Cloud Developer, you will be a recognised technical expert, providing leadership, mentoring colleagues, influencing architectural direction, and helping teams deliver high-quality solutions that create measurable business value.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design and development of reliable, scalable, and high-performance cloud solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance across multiple development initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve products, platforms, and engineering practices.
  • Translate complex business and technical requirements into innovative solutions.
  • Review designs, code, and project activities to ensure alignment with engineering standards, architectural principles, and quality expectations.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor when navigating complex or high-risk technical challenges.
  • Drive continuous improvement across software development processes and engineering practices.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, helping to build technical capability and encourage innovation within the team.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, product teams, engineering leaders, and stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, accelerate delivery, and enhance software quality.
  • Explore and adopt emerging AI technologies to improve engineering workflows and customer solutions.

What We're Looking For

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Typically 10-15 years of relevant software development experience.
  • Significant experience designing and building enterprise-scale cloud solutions.
  • Proven track record of leading complex technical initiatives and influencing architectural decisions.

Technical Skills

  • Strong programming skills in one or more of the following:
    • Python
    • Java
    • Groovy
    • Golang
    • JavaScript
  • Deep expertise in software architecture, systems design, development methodologies, and platform integration.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native technologies and modern application development practices.
  • Experience working with enterprise-scale distributed systems and cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge of cloud security principles including:
    • Identity and Access Management (IAM)
    • Firewalls
    • VPN technologies
    • Network security controls
  • Experience with web application frameworks such as:
    • Grails
    • Spring Boot
    • Or equivalent technologies
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure, networking, and cloud platform operations.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions and influence engineering direction.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence within teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal, written, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and business audiences.
  • Comfortable working with senior leadership and influencing decisions at multiple levels of the organisation.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience working with AI-enabled development practices and tools.
  • Proven history of innovation through delivered solutions, technical leadership, patents, or significant engineering contributions.
  • Experience working within Agile development environments.
