Block builds technology for economic empowerment.
The Role
Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Compliance Team works to protect Square and its customers while enabling safe growth across our ecosystems. Square Australia's Compliance Team is seeking a Deputy Chief Compliance Officer & Compliance Management System Manager (DCO) to play a key role in operating and strengthening the compliance framework across the business.
Reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer - Australia, you will operate as a senior individual contributor with significant autonomy and influence. You will be responsible for the effectiveness and ongoing maturity of Square Australia's Compliance Management System, ensuring it supports regulatory obligations, business priorities, and Square's risk appetite.
This role is well suited to an experienced compliance professional who can work independently, exercise sound judgement, and influence senior stakeholders across the organisation. While this is not a people-management role, you will be expected to lead through expertise, strong partnerships, and delivery.
This role is fully remote based in Australia only.
You Will
Compliance Management System Ownership
  • Own and operate Square Australia's Compliance Management System, ensuring it remains effective, scalable, and aligned with regulatory expectations and business needs.
  • Design, implement, and enhance compliance frameworks covering obligations management, risk assessment, monitoring, training programs, issue management, and reporting.
  • Act as Deputy to the Chief Compliance Officer, providing senior-level advice, support, and coverage across compliance matters as required.

Risk Assessment & Regulatory Change
  • Coordinate and where appropriate lead compliance risk assessments and maturity reviews, identifying gaps and driving pragmatic remediation and uplift initiatives.
  • Manage regulatory change processes, ensuring new and changing obligations are identified, assessed, and embedded into business operations.
  • Provide risk-based advice and credible challenges to the business, influencing decision-making through expertise rather than authority.

Regulatory Engagement & Reporting
  • Prepare high-quality compliance reporting for senior leadership, governance forums, and regulators.
  • Support regulatory engagement activities, including preparation of materials and responses to regulatory requests.
  • Contribute to maintaining constructive and transparent relationships with regulators.

Collaboration & Leadership
  • Partner closely with Legal, Risk, Product, Operations, Customer Experience, and Technology teams to embed compliance into day-to-day business practices and decision-making.
  • Play an active role in compliance and risk governance forums, including coordinating inputs, preparing papers and reporting, managing meeting cadence, and supporting effective decision-making outcomes.
  • Support the operation and continuous improvement of compliance governance processes, ensuring issues, risks, and remediation activities are tracked, reported, and escalated appropriately.
  • Act as a trusted escalation point within the compliance team, supporting consistent judgement, high-quality outcomes, and sound decision-making.
  • Mentor and support other compliance professionals, contributing to capability uplift, consistency, and maturity across the team.
  • Empower business and compliance teams by providing clear, practical guidance and support, enabling them to improve capability, manage risk effectively, and achieve positive and sustainable compliance outcomes.

You Have
  • Significant experience in compliance roles within financial services, payments, fintech, or regulated technology environments.
  • Strong understanding of Australian regulatory frameworks, including AFSL obligations, consumer protection, and conduct risk.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, operating, or uplifting Compliance Management Systems.
  • Proven ability to operate as a senior individual contributor, influencing outcomes across the business without direct authority.
  • Experience leading compliance risk assessments, obligations management, monitoring programs, and issue remediation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex regulatory information in a clear and practical manner.
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, evolving environments and navigating ambiguity with sound judgement.
  • A collaborative, pragmatic approach with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
