Sr Software Engineer (Java/Scala/AI)

What's the role?As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building, and evolving complex, scalable services that support HERE’s strategic products and platforms. You will take ownership from design through deployment, ensuring high availability, quality, and long‑term maintainability.You will collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and cross‑functional partners while contributing to engineering best practices and a strong, inclusive team culture.  Key responsibilities include:

• Designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and algorithms using Java, Scala, or Python
• Building and operating cloud‑based, distributed systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, and performance
• Creating and communicating technical designs through clear proposals, specifications, and diagrams
• Making balanced technical decisions by evaluating trade‑offs between delivery speed, quality, and long‑term sustainability
• Improving product quality through root‑cause analysis, automated testing, and continuous improvement practices
• Contributing to CI/CD pipelines and modern development workflows, including AI‑assisted code reviews and delivery optimizations
• Mentoring team members and sharing knowledge to continuously raise engineering standards across the team

Who are you?

• Strong hands‑on experience designing, building, and maintaining complex, production‑grade services using Java, Scala, or Python, with a focus on quality and reliability.
• Practical, day‑to‑day experience using AI‑powered coding assistants in a professional environment, with sound judgment on when to leverage AI support versus hands‑on coding.
• Skilled at reviewing, validating, and testing AI‑generated code, with awareness of common failure modes and a commitment to strong engineering standards.
• Experience breaking down ambiguous problems into clear technical specifications, writing effective prompts, and iterating through fast feedback loops.
• Hands‑on experience building and operating scalable, cloud‑based services, preferably on AWS, and working with distributed systems and service‑oriented architectures.
• Experience with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines (for example, GitLab), and comfort integrating AI‑assisted reviews and checks into modern delivery workflows.
• Comfortable working in Scrum teams, collaborating with global and cross‑functional stakeholders, and clearly communicating technical ideas through written and visual documentation.
• A collaborative and mentoring mindset, with a data‑informed approach to technical decision‑making and a strong commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
