Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy is seeking a passionate and experienced Builder I to join our in-house creative production studio in Plantation, Florida. Reporting to the Art Department Manager, the Builder I is responsible for planning, executing, and delivering complex set builds in support of photo, video, and event productions across studio and on-location environments.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with Spatial Designers, Stylists, and cross-functional production teams to translate creative concepts into actionable construction plans, material strategies, and build execution. You will own build delivery from planning through execution-developing sequencing, managing timelines, and ensuring alignment across stakeholders.
The Builder I is a highly skilled individual who can independently execute moderate-to-high visibility projects while leading project-level execution across small teams. This role requires strong technical tradecraft, the ability to manage multiple overlapping builds, and proactive communication to ensure alignment, mitigate risks, and deliver high-quality results.
What you'll do:
  • Execute complex, multi-component builds (multi-room environments, experiential sets, medium to large-scale or safety-sensitive structures) with high quality and consistency
  • Translate creative concepts into construction plans, including sequencing, materials, and build methodology
  • Break down projects into actionable tasks, timelines, and material estimates; ensure estimates are accurate and timely
  • Plan and manage execution across multiple overlapping builds, aligning work to production schedules and priorities
  • Provide project-level direction to builders and assistants, including task delegation, pacing, and quality control across the full build lifecycle
  • Lead installation of scenic environments, ensuring structural integrity, camera readiness, and alignment with creative intent
  • Execute advanced carpentry and finishing techniques, including custom paint, staining, aging, and faux finishes
  • Collaborate closely with Spatial Designers to influence build feasibility, materials, and execution approach
  • Partner with Stylists to align on build elements that impact set dressing and final presentation
  • Proactively communicate project status, risks, blockers, and timeline impacts early to production and leadership
  • Monitor material inventory and anticipate project needs to prevent delays or shortages
  • Maintain and reinforce clean, organized, and safe shop and studio environments during install and post-wrap
  • Ensure all builds are constructed to spec and meet quality, safety, and brand standards
  • Follow and reinforce safety practices related to tools, materials, and production environments

What you'll need:
  • 5+ years of experience in art, production, video, photo, or theater with a focus on carpentry and custom fabrication. Experience as a scene shop foreman or construction coordinator is a plus.
  • Experience directing and coordinating small teams at the project level
  • Proven ability to independently execute complex builds and manage full build scope from planning through delivery
  • Strong experience developing build plans, sequencing, and accurate material estimates
  • Experience in theatrical rigging as well as basic knowledge of structural engineering principles
  • Experience working with a variety of materials including wood, plastic, foam, plexiglass, and scenic finishes
  • Advanced proficiency with power tools and adherence to safety standards
  • Superb attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
  • Experience working on a CNC machine inclusive of BobCAD software
  • Familiarity with SketchUp / CAD software and Microsoft Office
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate risks and adapt quickly
  • Excellent communication skills with a proactive, no-surprises approach
  • Positive, team-oriented mindset with a strong sense of ownership
  • Receptive to feedback and able to apply learnings continuously
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Flexibility to support production schedules including early mornings, nights, weekends, and travel
  • Comfortable working in environments with all pet types
