With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.
All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.
About the Role:
As a Senior Revenue Accountant, you will be a critical contributor within the Revenue Accounting team, owning the end-to-end revenue recognition process for our Gusto Retirement segment while also lending support to new and emerging revenue products across the business. You will be responsible for accurate and timely revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606, maintaining and reconciling subledger systems, and partnering cross-functionally with Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Product teams to ensure financial integrity as we scale.
This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of how modern accounting is done. You will have the chance to build and leverage AI tools and automation to streamline repetitive processes, eliminate manual work, and raise the bar on efficiency across the team. If you're someone who gets excited about making accounting faster and smarter — not just more accurate — this role is for you!
About the Team:
Our Revenue Accounting team is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely recognition of revenue in accordance with relevant accounting standards. We are a collaborative, forward-thinking team focused on continuous improvement and leveraging technology and AI to streamline our close processes. As we continue to grow and introduce new products and partnerships, this role will be critical in maintaining the quality and integrity of our revenue close while helping shape the processes that support our next phase of growth.
Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Own end-to-end revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment (401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, plan administration)
- Prepare monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules for retirement revenue streams
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close within established timelines
- Apply ASC 606 guidance to complex arrangements including variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal vs. agent assessments
- Build and maintain automated solutions using AI tools, Python/SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual work
- Identify and implement process improvements across the revenue close, reducing cycle time and increasing accuracy
- Partner with auditors during annual audits — lead walkthroughs, provide documentation, respond to inquiries
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Retirement Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Data teams on revenue data integrity and new product launches
Here’s what we're looking for:
- Bachelor's in Accounting; CPA preferred (active or in progress)
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue accounting
- Strong ASC 606 knowledge applied to SaaS, subscription, or fee-based models
- Proven track record building automation — scripts, tools, or workflows that reduced manual effort (you can speak to these concretely)
- Advanced Excel; Python or SQL a strong plus
- NetSuite or revenue subledger experience a plus
- Big 4 or public accounting background preferred; fintech or financial services a bonus
- Comfortable with ambiguity, curious about AI, and excited to build processes from scratch

Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
