The Role
AutoStore is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer who has successfully carried new products to market. We are looking for an engineer with experience taking complex electromechanical products from concept to launch. The successful engineer will have owned mechanical systems through the challenges encountered during development and production, including reliability failures, wear and fatigue issues, manufacturing constraints, supplier quality challenges, tolerance stack-up issues, and the difficult design trade-offs required to deliver robust, scalable products without compromising long-term performance.
This individual will serve as a technical leader, owning the architecture and development of key mechanical subsystems within AutoStore's robotic and automation platforms. They will be expected to balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost while delivering innovative solutions that can be successfully deployed at scale.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Mechanical System Ownership – Concept Through Production
- Lead the design and development of mechanical and electromechanical systems from concept through architecture, CAD design, prototyping, validation, and production release.
- Own subsystem architecture, component strategy, and technical trade-offs balancing performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
- Design and develop mechanical solutions including structural components, mechanisms, drive systems, robotic assemblies, and other electromechanical systems.
- Lead and execute root-cause investigations of design, manufacturing, reliability, and field-performance issues.
- Perform and guide engineering analysis, including FEA, fatigue analysis, tolerance stack-ups, dynamic analysis, vibration assessments, and design verification activities.
- Drive DFM, DFA, DFR, and DFx activities with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure scalable and cost-effective production.
- Own prototype builds, engineering validation testing, pilot builds, and production launch activities.
- Partner closely with electrical, firmware, software, controls, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams to ensure successful product integration.
- Develop robust mechanical systems capable of operating reliably within demanding robotic and automated warehouse environments.
- Define and execute functional, environmental, vibration, fatigue, wear, and life-cycle testing to validate product performance and reliability.
- Support supplier development, component qualification, manufacturing readiness, and continuous product improvement initiatives.
Key Qualifications:
- 9+ years of experience in mechanical engineering and product development of complex mechanical or electromechanical systems.
- Experience leading products from concept through validation, production launch, and sustaining engineering.
- Strong proficiency with 3D CAD, FEA, FMEA, PLM systems, and engineering documentation best practices.
- Experience in designing mechanisms and electromechanical systems incorporating motors, gear trains, bearings, belt drives, actuators, sensors, and power transmission components.
- Strong understanding of mechanical system dynamics, kinematics, fatigue, wear mechanisms, vibration, and reliability engineering.
- Experience performing GD&T, tolerance analysis, tolerance stack-ups, and design verification activities.
- Experience performing structural, modal, and dynamic analysis of mechanical systems and moving machinery.
- Experience selecting materials and manufacturing processes for high-volume products, including sheet metal, aluminum extrusions, castings, machined components, and injection-molded plastics.
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Reliability (DFR), and Design for Cost (DFC).
- Experience working with global suppliers and contract manufacturing partners to support high-volume production.
- Experience with requirements development, interface management, risk assessment, and system-level trade studies.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including subsystem ownership, technical decision-making, design reviews, and mentoring of engineers.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills with a hands-on engineering mindset.
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field (relevant experience may substitute for formal education).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing robotics, automation equipment, autonomous systems, material handling equipment, or industrial machinery.
- Experience with warehouse automation, ASRS systems, or automated fulfillment technologies.
- Experience with reliability growth testing, accelerated life testing, and field-performance analysis.
- Experience working within cross-functional product development teams spanning mechanical, electrical, controls, and software disciplines.
- Experience with automated warehouse products is preferred.

What We Do
Welcome to AutoStore, where we make space and storage simpler! AutoStore™, founded in 1996, is a warehouse robot technology company that invented and continues to pioneer cube storage automation, the densest order-fulfillment solution in existence. Our focus is to marry software and hardware with human abilities to create the future of warehousing. The company is global, with over 950+ systems in 45 countries in a wide range of industries. All sales are distributed, designed, installed, and serviced by a network of qualified system integrators we call "partners". Figuring other industries could benefit from this new cube storage automation concept, Arrow Electronics acquired Hatteland Electronic in 2000. The funding enabled Hatteland Group to invest in AutoStore, and from that moment the commercialization period started. The mature and robust product called AutoStore was to become the backbone of the Hatteland Group and it was ready to conquer the world. In 2021, investment powerhouse SoftBank became an AutoStore shareholder following prior acquisitions by Thomas H. Lee Partners, L.P. and EQT Private Equity. Today, with more than 950 systems and 40,000 robots across 45 countries, AutoStore is poised to continue its aggressive global expansion.
