What You’ll Do:
You’ll be tasked with reporting on the intersection of law and technology, with a particular focus on developments in the UK and Europe. Your coverage area will include covering everything from technology that lawyers use and its impact on the legal profession, to the way certain technologies are being controlled and regulated. This means writing about topics like artificial intelligence, e-discovery, data privacy, cybersecurity, automation, the blockchain and the internet of things (among others) within the context of the legal industry.

These are the primary coverage areas:
  • The latest generative AI developments, models, regulations, and cybersecurity and data privacy issues, and how these technologies and developments are impacting the legal industry.
  • All other technology used by lawyers and how it’s redefining the profession, including product and trend news. This applies to law firms, corporate legal departments, and other legal service providers.
  • How the application of data analytics, technology and innovation are changing the business of law and the delivery of legal services.
  • The companies behind the technology, including their investments, mergers and acquisitions, and major career moves.
  • Legal technology’s fast-growing startup scene, comprising companies across the globe.
  • The market for e-discovery technology and the opportunities, challenges, and regulations facing e-discovery professionals.
  • Evolving UK and EU regulations involving cybersecurity, data privacy, and technology, and what such laws portend for legal professionals.
  • Major litigation and case law impacting the technology space.
  • Live stories from industry conferences, written as well as documented through social media.

Your work will primarily appear on Legaltech News and Law.com, though will often also be published on other Centellic sites including The American Lawyer, Lexology, The National Law Journal, Corporate Counsel, The New York Law Journal, The Recorder, and other local, national and international publications.

About the Legal Technology Team:
You’ll be joining a small, tight-knit team of reporters and editors operating out of different offices who provide legal tech coverage for Centellic’s various publications. The team functions as a part of a fast-moving, proactive and collaborative newsroom that spans the globe. We strive to be at the forefront of legal technology reporting, covering innovation as it’s happening, not after it’s already established. We’re looking for someone who’s always looking ahead for the next big story.

Key Responsibilities
  • Publish at least one piece of content per day, whether an article, enterprise, or multimedia project
  • Build a reliable network of sources from across the legal ecosystem, including law firms, legal technology companies, and corporate legal departments
  • Follow the legal technology beat; get scoops on major business, product, innovation, and industry news
  • Come up with ideas for both daily and enterprise coverage
  • Write clean copy under tight daily deadlines
  • Help to create and analyze datasets for editorial projects spearheaded by the legal technology team
  • Collaborate with other editorial teams across Centellic to develop a more holistic understanding of the legal market
  • Travel to and report on legal technology conferences and events
  • Maintain an active LinkedIn account to build your reporter brand (can use existing LinkedIn account)

Skills Knowledge and Expertise
  • Degree in journalism or communications, or equivalent relevant experience
  • At least 2 years prior professional reporting experience preferred, but we’re open to recent graduates
  • Background reporting on technology or the legal market is a plus, but not required as long as you’re willing to learn
  • Must be able to work well in a small team, open to brainstorming and sharing new ideas
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks under strict daily deadlines; strong organizational and time management skills are a must
  • Social media proficiency and experience with content management systems preferred; must be able to master new systems quickly
  • Multimedia skills (podcasting, audio and video editing) are a bonus, but not required
