Our Opportunity
Chewy's AI & Data organization is seeking a Data Engineer III to lead the design and evolution of Chewy's enterprise data ecosystem. EDS powers the company's data and AI foundation-enabling machine learning, advanced analytics, and generative AI applications that improve customer experience and operational efficiency at scale. As a Data Engineer III, you'll be a system-level designer and mentor-architecting scalable data systems, establishing engineering standards, and guiding others in building for performance, cost, and reliability. You'll collaborate across AI, data science, and platform engineering to deliver trusted, intelligent data products that serve as the backbone for Chewy's next generation of data and AI capabilities. What You'll Do
- Architect and deliver large-scale, cross-domain data solutions in Snowflake, dbt Cloud, Kafka, and AWS.
- Design systems for real-time streaming, AI feature pipelines, and event-driven architectures.
- Establish data engineering standards for modeling, testing, observability, and cost optimization.
- Lead modernization and automation initiatives, including AI-assisted data validation, metadata enrichment, and auto-documentation.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and advocate for practical adoption that improves velocity, reliability, or insight generation.
- Mentor engineers across levels through code reviews, design sessions, and technical coaching.
- Collaborate with architects and data science teams to align data infrastructure with ML, analytics, and AI requirements.
- Champion a culture of continuous learning and experimentation with AI in engineering workflows.
- Set parameters for quality control and perform error analysis to improve models; lead code reviews and guide secure coding practices.
What You'll Need
- Candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 6+ years of experience in data engineering or platform development.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Deep experience with Snowflake, dbt Cloud, and streaming technologies like Kafka.
- Proven ability to design large-scale architectures with strong performance, cost, and reliability characteristics.
- Advanced Terraform skills-design reusable modules and multi-account environments for AWS/Snowflake, implement policy-as-code and drift detection, and lead code reviews/migrations.
- Experience defining standards and practices for data quality, lineage, and observability.
- Strong understanding of real-time and AI/ML data pipelines.
- Track record of mentorship, technical leadership, and cross-functional influence.
- Curiosity and conviction about how AI will redefine data engineering-and the desire to lead that change.
Why You'll Love This Role
- Shape the evolution of Chewy's enterprise data and AI platform.
- Lead large-scale projects that unlock speed, trust, and intelligence in every corner of the company.
