1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but most providers don't accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway’s mission is to fix this by building a new mental healthcare system everyone can access. We started by solving the biggest barrier to care: insurance. The admin work - credentialing, claims, payment reconciliation - is a nightmare. We've automated that.
But we're going further. Over 75,000 providers across all 50 states run their practice on our software, serving over 1 million patients. We are building the best tools for therapists to run their entire practice, reimagining the experience of finding a therapist, and investing in the platform foundations to enable this at scale. We aren't just a billing layer; we are becoming the platform where care actually happens.
We're a Series D company with $325M+ in funding (a16z, Accel, Spark Capital, etc.), looking for exceptional people to help us achieve this mission. We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.
About the Payer & Patient Outcomes team at HeadwayHeadway's relationship with payers is evolving from a credentialing and billing partner to something much more valuable: a network that can prove what it delivers. The Payer & Patient Outcomes team owns that transformation — building the products, data infrastructure, and measurement frameworks that let Headway walk into a payer conversation and say, with evidence, what clinical outcomes we drive, for which patients, at what cost.
We work at the intersection of clinical strategy, data engineering, and commercial — and we're building infrastructure that doesn't exist yet in behavioral health at scale.
About this roleWe're hiring a Principal PM to own the most foundational problem on the team: building the data layer that makes every Headway patient legible — what clinical segment they're in, what outcomes we should expect for them, and what their care costs relative to alternatives.
Today, that infrastructure doesn't exist. We have PROMs data and growing claims visibility, but we can't yet answer the questions that matter most to payers: Is it working? Is it worth it? This role exists to change that.
You'll define and ship the product systems that close that gap — partnering with data engineering, data science, and clinical strategy to build something durable and auditable, not just internally coherent.
What You'll OwnThe patient segmentation and stratification infrastructure — the product that classifies every Headway patient by clinical profile, behavioral signals, and known drivers of clinical outcomes, making that classification defensible and predictive at scale
The cost of care measurement layer — integrating internal and external cost data to give each patient and segment a Headway cost basis and a market comparison, auditable by payers on their own terms
Payer-facing data products — the reporting and data interfaces that translate our internal infrastructure into payer-legible population summaries, powering every commercial conversation our BD team has
The data strategy for the outcomes team — defining what we build, what we buy, what we defer, and in what order; setting the architectural vision and owning the cross-functional alignment to execute it
You've owned complex data infrastructure products end-to-end — not just analytics or reporting, but systems other teams depend on
You're deeply technically proficient — you write complex SQL, engage with statistical methods, and work as a near-peer to data scientists rather than delegating all data work
You've had your numbers challenged by an external party — a payer, a regulator, an auditor — and you know what it takes to make a cost or outcome claim actually hold up
You're comfortable operating without a playbook — you've set product strategy in ambiguous domains and made sharp bets about what to build, buy, or defer
You've aligned engineering, clinical, and commercial stakeholders around a shared data vision without any of them reporting to you
Bonus: you have direct experience with claims data, episode cost modeling, or risk stratification; or you transitioned into PM from a data science or analytics engineering background.
We believe a team's strength is in its people, and we cannot achieve this mission without a team that reflects the diversity of this problem – across race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, national origin, religion, family status, disability, military status, and experience.
