About New York Life Investment Management
With over $800 billion in assets under management, NYLIM is a Pensions & Investments' Top 30 Largest Money Manager and one of the largest global asset managers serving institutional, retail and insurance clients. NYLIM brings together the firm's global investment teams under one unified brand, combining specialized expertise with the strength and stability of New York Life.
Our platform is built on disciplined active management, deep investment capabilities and a long-term partnership approach designed to deliver enduring value across market cycles and help clients navigate the next era of investing.
More powerful, together, we combine the agility of specialized investment teams with the scale and longevity of a leading mutual institution.
What You'll Do:
The strategist will serve as a member of NYLIM's Global Market Strategy team, helping to develop and articulate the firm's house economic, market, and cross-asset views, with a particular focus on private markets.
A primary focus of this role will be leading and expanding the team's research and thought leadership across private markets, including private equity, private credit, real estate, and real assets. The strategist will help assess developments across these markets, evaluate their role within diversified portfolios, and connect private markets insights to the team's broader macroeconomic, market, and asset allocation views. In doing so, they will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key private asset managers within the NYLIM platform.
The successful candidate brings strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to credibly represent the firm externally: in client meetings, industry events, and media. Travel may include U.S. and international locations for direct meetings with sales teams and both institutional and retail investor clients. Comfort with senior clients and investment teams is a must.
Outside of private markets research and commercial work, the strategist will bring strong macro and investments-related research and analytical skills, and the ability to synthesize evidence into clear "what to do" guidance. They will partner across investment teams, product, sales, and marketing teams.
What You'll Do:
• Conduct original research to support the firm's economic, market, and allocation views, with a particular focus on private markets.
• Lead the GMS team's private markets research, including analysis of private credit, private equity, real estate, and real assets.
• Translate team views into decision-useful allocation guidance (positioning ranges, time horizon, risk considerations), spanning both public and private markets, with consideration for investor objectives, liquidity needs, constraints, and time horizons; with the goal of supporting client and partner decision-making rather than discretionary portfolio management.
• Represent the firm's views in internal investor forums, retail and institutional client meetings, and externally, including via mainstage and panel appearances at industry conferences and events, as well as in media.
• Develop and maintain a light scenario/trigger discipline (what could change our view; alternative paths) and partner with risk / portfolio managers to pressure-test cross-asset implications.
• Contribute to client and marketing publications and collaborate to ensure brand / compliance alignment and consistent messaging.
• Measure adoption and impact (usage by partners/clients, influenced opportunities) and incorporate feedback to improve guidance.
• Represent the GMS team in stakeholder forums and enterprise initiatives; share expertise and contribute to team-wide research and strategic initiatives.
What You'll Bring:
• 10+ years of highly relevant work experience such as multi-asset strategy, private markets research, investment strategy, asset allocation, investment consulting, or portfolio construction; direct portfolio management experience is not required and is not the primary qualification for success in this role.
• Proven experience in asset allocation, portfolio construction, and investment strategy, with meaningful knowledge of private markets and alternative investments.
• Exceptional presentation and communication skills. Comfort presenting to large audiences and engaging with a range of investor sophistication is a must. Experience working with institutional investors or engaging with institutional audiences is a plus.
• Strong understanding of private market asset classes and their role in diversified portfolios.
• Knowledge of macroeconomics, markets, and investment strategy.
• Understanding of portfolio implementation considerations, including sizing, liquidity, time horizon, and risk.
• Experience adapting guidance to non-U.S. investors, vehicles, and regulatory/operational constraints.
• Travel for priority firm and client engagements, potentially internationally; up to two weeks per month.
• Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build trust and influence at all levels; enthusiasm for relationship-building; demonstrated success with investment clients.
• Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage complex, cross-functional projects from concept through execution; ability to manage multiple workflows.
• Proactive, resourceful, and comfortable operating in fast-paced, high-expectation environments.
• Comfortable with data tools (Bloomberg, Excel; specialized software such as Macrobond/Haver/Factset/Prequin/Pitchbook a plus).
• Bachelor's degree preferred; Master's, CFA, CAIA, or other advanced credentials a plus.
