Job Description:

At The Mutual Group, we’re building a modern analytics organization that plays a critical role in shaping business strategy and driving profitable underwriting growth.  As a Data Science Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience applying analytics to real property & casualty insurance business problems. Working alongside our actuarial and data teams, the intern will support model monitoring, exploratory analysis, and documentation while building a foundation in predictive modeling, insurance fundamentals, and modern analytics workflows. This is an applied, mentorship-driven experience designed to develop both technical and professional skills, as well as introduce students to data science career paths in insurance.

Work Arrangement:

  • Employees who live within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. The initial training period may require additional in‑office days.

Accountabilities:

Core Analytics & Data Science Work

  • Support exploratory data analysis for pricing, underwriting, claims, or operational analytics use cases.

  • Build or enhance repeatable reporting outputs such as model monitoring summaries, rating variable distributions, actual-versus-expected analysis, or lift-chart support.

  • Help document modeling datasets, feature logic, assumptions, limitations, and data lineage.

  • Contribute to code cleanup, reusable functions, testing scripts, and version-controlled project organization.

Business & Insurance Learning

  • Learn foundational insurance concepts including exposure, premium, claims frequency, claims severity, loss ratio, rate adequacy, and underwriting risk selection.

  • Translate analytical findings into business-friendly summaries for actuarial, underwriting, claims, or leadership audiences.

  • Shadow team members to understand how model outputs are consumed in pricing, profitability analysis, underwriting workflows, and management reporting.

  • Prepare a capstone presentation connecting technical work to business value – such as improved pricing insight, greater efficiency, better monitoring, or clearer documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate (junior/senior) or graduate degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, analytics, economics, or a related field.

  • Comfort with at least one programming language, preferably Python or R.

  • Basic SQL skills, or the ability and willingness to learn SQL quickly.

  • Coursework or project experience involving statistics, regression, machine learning, data visualization, or applied analytics.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and an interest in applying analytics to real business problems.

  • Interest in insurance, financial services, risk analytics, or business decision support.

  • Strong analytical thinking and quantitative skills.

  • Exposure to version control (e.g., Git), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau), or model monitoring concepts.

  • Curiosity, reliability, and a collaborative, feedback-oriented mindset.

Why Join The Mutual Group:

  • Gain meaningful, real-world data science experience.

  • Work alongside experienced data scientists, data engineers, and credentialed actuaries who are invested in your development.

  • Contribute to projects that have a direct impact on business decisions.

  • Build technical, analytical, and professional skills that will prepare you for a successful data science career.

  • Experience a collaborative culture that values learning, collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.
