T he North America (NA) Chief Reserving Actuary will lead the North America Reserving function. Position involves being responsible for the team performing thorough reserve analysis, maintaining reasonable and adequate reserves for this $20 Billion reserve base, clearly and transparently communicating results of reserve studies to key stakeholders, identifying elements of the reserve analysis that is particularly relevant to future business decisions by the NA business unit, effectively managing and leading a large team, and building strong relationships with business leaders and other key leaders throughout the organization.
Responsibilities
- Provide an independent assessment of the NA reserves and associated reserve risks, ensuring the adequacy and accuracy of the NA reserves.
- Ensure use of accurate, sound, and innovative approaches in projecting and setting reserving guidelines that are consistent with those of Global Risk Solutions (GRS).
- Communicate the quarterly reserve analyses to the NA leadership.
- Lead and develop a NA reserving capability that is technical and commercial-minded.
- Be an inclusive leader committed to mentoring and developing team members to assume progressively senior actuarial and business leadership roles.
- Provide proactive insights that are sought out by the business leaders.
- Identify key trends, areas of uncertainty to monitor, and macroeconomic factors that are impacting the business.
- Work in close collaboration with underwriting, pricing, claims and finance to develop a common view of the business.
- Work in partnership with the various stakeholders to identify emerging trends that could impact results and propose corrective action in a timely manner.
- Apply innovative approaches and leading-edge tools to analyze the business.
- Ensure the quality of the data and its consistent application in the reserving process.
- Foster a culture of technical rigor, transparency, and consistency.
- Execute a governance framework that ensures that reserving guidelines are consistently applied and all processes comply with internal operational control requirements and all external regulatory and audit requirements.
- Collaborate with the broader actuarial organization and other strategic business units to share knowledge and advance the business.
- Seek opportunities to continuously improve and streamline processes.
- Keep abreast of new reserving methodologies, trends and product/ tort reforms and other external issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Insurance designations desirable
- Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation required, or comparable actuarial education/designation combined with relevant experience
- Demonstrated expertise in financial management of a P&C business
- Ability to participate effectively on the senior management team
- Strong analytical skills with solid understanding of all casualty actuarial techniques, standards, and assumptions
- Expert knowledge of insurance operations and P&C insurance business
- Excellent management and communication skills
- Strategic thinking and ability to set direction for team
- Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate areas of senior management concern, integrate different perspectives, and respond accordingly
