Accounting Internship
An Accounting Intern in the Controllers department will be assigned to one division of the department but have the opportunity to shadow other divisions. Basic responsibilities for most Interns include entry of general ledger journal entries into the accounting system, reconciliation of accounts, and completion of various projects that may be assigned. The function of each division within the Controllers department is as follows:
- T ax: Completes federal, state and local corporate tax returns. Performs reporting and payment of local, state and federal taxes. Prepares estimates of income taxes and year-end tax accruals. Assures compliance with federal, state, local and foreign tax laws and regulations.
- Investment Accounting: Assures that all financial activity related to the investment portfolios is accounted for in the general ledger. Monitors the financial results of the investments and prepares financial and compliance reports, analysis and disclosures to meet all reporting requirements.
- Mutual Fund Accounting : Performs fund administration for the Northwestern Mutual Series Fund, the NMIMC Co-Investment Funds, and Separate Accounts. Oversees the Mutual Fund daily accounting, prepares and reports the financial and tax accounting results, and ensure fund compliance with SEC laws, IRS regulations, and internal investment restrictions.
- Enterprise Accounting : Reconciles cash balances for Northwestern Mutual, subsidiaries and affiliates. Performs manual accounting for Enterprise focused activities and Unclaimed Property reporting.
- Risk Product Accounting : Assists with ensuring that financial activity for insurance and annuity products and related field compensation are appropriately accounted for in the general ledger. Prepares and/or approves journal entries, account and system balancing reconciliations and investigates and resolves any findings by working with systems, client services and field services contacts. Prepares complex quarterly regulatory state reporting schedules and analysis. Collaborates on process improvement projects and external audit requests.
- Financial Planning, Reporting, & Analysis - IPS : Assures that financial activity related to Northwestern Mutual's investment products & services subsidiaries are appropriately accounted for. Measures, analyzes and reports on the financial results, business trends, and key performance indicators for investment products & services subsidiaries. Assists with external audit coordination and testing. Internal financial reporting to key stakeholders.

- Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field from an accredited college or university
- Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
- Previous work or classroom experience in one or more of the following: Accounting, Finance

Preferred skills and proficiencies
- Previous Accounting, Finance internship and/or relevant project experience
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability
- High degree of self-motivation, passion, and a drive to learn
