VP and Head of Product Kate Estep is a champion for every person on her team — “especially those that may not be as comfortable as self-advocates,” she told Built In. As she ascended the ranks at Flatiron, Estep’s empathetic leadership sensibilities have been molded by the company’s “learn, teach, grow” value. Estep looks for opportunities to align her team members with roles that will stretch their capabilities, as fellow team members and leaders help nurture their confidence in a healthy way — just as Estep’s managers did for her. “I have had several managers ‘take a bet on me’ by slotting me into projects or roles that I felt I was unqualified for,” Estep said. “But that allowed me to rise to the challenge and grow.”

Employee Reviews

Allison Candido

I fundamentally believe in the mission of Flatiron and what we are trying to accomplish with our software — and we still have a lot of work to do to continue transforming oncology care.

Allison Candido, VP and Head of Engineering

By strategically innovating tools side by side with Flatiron’s existing technology, VP and Head of Engineering Allison Candido and her team are reimagining the way technology can be utilized in their users — and by extension, their patients — daily lives. Candido and her team’s work mainly focuses on a mature product, OncoEMR, but they take innovative leaps when they make sense, as seen in the company’s Flatiron Assist product. “We may not be building the most cutting-edge technology, but we are innovating the way our users do their work and treat their patients,” Candido said.

Kate Estep

Growth looks like expanding your breadth of influence — we connect strong PMs with projects that increase their impact. This enables PMs to build foundational product leadership skills that prepare them for roles at the next level.

Kate Estep, VP and Head of Product

What has growth looked like for VP and Head of Product, Kate Estep? Recognizing her greatest asset and Achilles heel: empathy. Working in a B2B environment, Estep and her colleagues must make prioritization decisions — which impact oncology nurses, physicians, patients and more. Estep internalizes the impact of “saying no” for the physician and patient on the other end of that decision but has learned to leverage the power of compassion. “I empathize with the impact of those user decisions, and have cultivated that empathy into a powerful trust-building tool,” Estep said.
