With renowned academic institutions and favorable immigration policies, Vancouver also benefits from its partnership with Seattle and Portland through the Cascadia Innovation Corridor initiative. Sierra Wireless designs and manufactures communication equipment like cellular modules, routers and software for connecting devices. Its products are used in the transportation, energy, healthcare, manufacturing and public safety industries. The company was founded in Vancouver in 1993 and now operates across North America, Europe and Asia.

 

Founded in 1993, Absolute Software’s cybersecurity solution allows companies to monitor, protect and control the devices used by their hybrid and remote workers. Embedded in the firmware of more than 600 million devices, Absolute’s software can’t be deleted, even if the hard drive is swapped. The Vancouver-based company, which employs roughly 700 workers, was acquired in 2023 by investment firm Crosspoint Capital Partners.

 

Persistent Systems is an Indian digital engineering company offering digital transformation software, wireless radio systems, consumer technology solutions and network performance services. In Canada, the company provides solutions for the Department of National Defence and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Persistent Systems has four Canadian locations in Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.

 

Equativ is an adtech company that provides a digital marketplace for advertisers, monetization solutions for publishers and specialized marketing services for businesses of all sizes. In 2024, it merged with Canadian company Sharethrough, an omnichannel ad exchange. Equativ is headquartered in Paris and New York.

 

Vancouver-based Elevated Signals makes manufacturing and supply chain management software for the cannabis industry. More than 120 manufacturers around the world use its platform to eliminate inefficiencies and cut costs. In 2024, Elevated Signals raised $7.9 million in Series A funding to expand into new markets.

 

Salesforce’s customer relationship management platform helps businesses centralize customer information, automate sales and marketing processes, communicate with customers and manage their social media. The company has been in Vancouver since 2012, and opened a new office in the city in 2019. Salesforce employs 72,000 people worldwide.

 

Canadian fintech company BlocPal is building a neo-banking platform that offers both traditional and decentralized financial and wealth management services. Its merchant-centric model aims to put financial control in the hands of local communities by installing micro-atm machines so that local shops can process their customers’ financial transactions on-site. Founded in 2017, BlocPal has processed more than $20 billion in transactions. 

 

Notion makes a productivity software platform that allows users to organize notes, tasks, calendars and databases all in one place. The platform, designed for individual and team workflows, is used by companies like Netflix, Discord and Figma. Notion is based in the United States, with additional offices in Canada, Ireland, Korea, Japan and India.

 

Software company SAP makes enterprise resource planning products that help businesses manage their sales, finances, human resources and data. The company has a research and development lab, SAP Labs Canada, in Vancouver. SAP employs more than 105,000 people around the world.

 

Arista Networks is a cloud networking company best known for its switches, routers and EOS cloud operating network. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Arista has more than 9,000 customers, including cloud titans like Microsoft and Meta. The company has a workforce of 3,600 employees and operates an R&D office just outside Vancouver in Burnaby.

 

Insurance software company Vertafore makes tech products that help insurance agencies with customer communications, market connectivity, agency management and policy creation. Its platforms are used by more than 15,000 insurance agencies. Vertafore is based in the United States, with additional locations in Canada and India.

 

Udemy’s online learning platform provides thousands of courses on a wide range of topics. Users include both individuals looking to learn and upskill and organizations working to train their teams. Udemy has more than 75,000 instructors teaching courses in 75 languages. Udemy employs more than 1,500 people.

 

Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB is a cloud-native, distributed SQL database, a platform that simplifies operations and mission-critical tech execution. Designed to scale data quickly and sustainably, Cockroach Labs is used by companies like Bose, Shipt and Hard Rock Digital. The company is based in New York, with additional offices in the UK, India and Canada.

 

AI company ServiceNow’s cloud-based workflow productivity platform helps organizations streamline and simplify their operations. The platform includes workflow automation, IT operations management, customer service management and cyber security functions. ServiceNow has 65 offices worldwide.

 

Netgear became a household name for its consumer modems, routers and home WiFi solutions, but it also offers a full portfolio of routers, switches and networking solutions for businesses. Employing nearly 700 workers, the company is headquartered in San Jose, but its Canadian operations are based out of its R&D office in Richmond, B.C. 

 

Microsoft, which brought us the Windows operating system, Xbox and Microsoft office suite, is on the forefront of innovation in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other emerging technologies. Less than 150 miles away from its Redmond, Washington headquarters, Microsoft’s campus in downtown Vancouver employed more than 1,900 workers as of 2021. The company’s footprint is projected to grow even further when it opens a new office within the 32-story downtown skyscraper. 

 

Operto makes hospitality management software for property managers, hoteliers and vacation rental owners. The platform connects guests, owners and third-party vendors, combining guest experience, property management and upselling functionality in one place. Operto is based in Vancouver.

 

Trulioo’s software allows businesses to verify the identity of the companies it does business with, which reduces their exposure to risk and helps them to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations. Roughly 300 employees work out of the company’s 35,000-square-foot Vancouver headquarters office.

 

Machine learning company EliseAI creates AI-based customer service programs, including chatbots and leasing dashboards for property managers that automate work orders, renewal reminders and payment tracking. Its clients are primarily in the housing and healthcare sectors, including 200 property managers in the United States and Canada. EliseAI was founded in 2017.
