Video game production is one of the biggest industries in Canada, accounting for the vast majority of the country’s digital media revenue. Indeed, with more than 900 studios here, Canada is up there as one of the largest gaming markets in the world. Whether they’re making massive AAA titles or free-to-play mobile games, these are some of the top gaming companies that call Canada home.

Top Gaming Companies in Canada

Boasting a net revenue of about $7.4 billion in 2023, Electronic Arts is one of the world’s most successful AAA video game developers. Founded in 1982 by former Apple executive Trip Hawkins, the company was a pioneer of the early computer gaming industry. Today, EA is responsible for popular titles like Apex Legends, Sims and FIFA. The California-based company has offices throughout Canada, including in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Montreal. 

 

Outside of its New York City headquarters, Rockstar Games operates nine subsidiary studios, one of which is located in Toronto. The video game developer is known for creating open-world games like the Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto franchises. Grand Theft Auto V, the most recent title in the series, has sold around 190 million copies since its release in 2013, making it one of the highest-selling video games of all time. Its much-anticipated sequel, Grand Theft Auto VI, will be released in 2025.

 

Best known for popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, Ubisoft is one of the largest video game publishers in the world. Many of its games are available across platforms including Xbox, PC and PlayStation, as well as smartphones. Although the company is officially headquartered in France, it has a large studio in Quebec, which is involved in several of Ubisoft’s most prominent titles. 

 

Founded by a team of Myspace co-founders and former 20th Century Fox executive Josh Yguado, Jam City predominantly produces free-to-play mobile games. Several of its signature titles incorporate popular characters and storylines from Disney, Warner Bros. and Universal Studios movies and shows, such as Frozen Adventures, Jurassic World Alive and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. The company is headquartered in California, and has studios all over the world, including in Montreal and Toronto.

 

Beenox is a video game developer based in Quebec. The studio is a wholly owned subsidiary of gaming giant Activision, and is perhaps best known for its work on the Call of Duty series — one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. Beenox has offices in both Quebec City and Montreal.

 

Take-Two develops, publishes and markets games, largely under T2 Mobile Games, Private Division, 2K and Rockstar Games. Its products can be accessed on console systems or personal computers, including tablets and smartphones. The company is headquartered in New York City and has its Canadian office in Yaletown, Vancouver. 

 

Kabam is a wholly owned subsidiary of Netmarble games that has Canadian offices in Montreal and Vancouver. It develops immersive and multiplayer mobile games through partnerships with brands like Universal, Hasbro and Disney. The company’s portfolio includes Disney Mirrorverse, Mini Guns, Marvel Contest of Champions and Fast & Furious 6: The Game

 

Blackbird Interactive is the independent studio behind games like Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Crossfire: Legion, Homeworld 3 and Minecraft Legends. The Vancouver-based company has an internal CG cinematics department. In collaboration with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, it’s helped develop Project Eagle.

 

Gameloft is headquartered in Montreal and has another Canadian office in Toronto. The company boasts 60 games in its portfolio and claims 1.5 million daily downloads of its games. Its franchises include Dungeon Hunter, Order & Chaos, Modern Combat and Asphalt. Gameloft delivers new games with help from its partners, such as Mattel, Marvel and Hasbro.
