Sompo has a unique opportunity for a VP, IFRS 17 & Life Reinsurance in our Global Finance team. 

This role will play a key part in the continued development and optimization of our IFRS 17 processes and in the establishment of the Sompo Life Re ("SLRe") entity. The position will focus on enhancing the Group finance close cycle, embedding IFRS 17 into business-as-usual operations, and strengthening the integration of actuarial and finance capabilities across both P&C and Life entities to improve reporting quality, efficiency, and insight. The VP, IFRS 17 & Life Re will report to the SVP, Chief Operating Office, Global Finance.

What you’ll be doing:

Sompo Life Re Finance Leadership:

  • Act as Controller for the Sompo Life Re entity, with full ownership of financial calculations, journal postings, and financial reporting outputs.
  • Provide SLRe leadership with insightful management information, analysis, and clear explanations of results to support business decision-making and performance management.
  • Manage and coordinate third-party service providers, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of services aligned with Head Office Japan reporting requirements.
  • Ensure all statutory filings are prepared accurately and submitted in accordance with local regulatory deadlines.
  • Build scalable finance processes and a robust control environment to support future growth, maintaining clear documentation and evidence of control execution.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of materials for the Audit Committee and Board of Directors. 

IFRS 17 Process Enhancement:

  • Act as the finance lead for the end-to-end Group IFRS 17 reporting process, ensuring clear alignment between actuarial methodologies, assumptions, and financial reporting outcomes.
  • Drive the integration of IFRS 17 into the business-as-usual Group close cycle, working closely with Group Reporting and local business units.
  • Partner closely with Group Reporting, Actuarial, and regional Finance teams to ensure the IFRS 17 outputs are well understood, validated, and suitable for both external and management reporting.
  • Strengthen and upskill the Finance team’s execution capability across IFRS 17 activities, with a particular focus on LRC calculations, analysis, and controls.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor on IFRS 17 matters across the companies P&C and Life business. 

Group Finance Close Process:

  • Serve as the IFRS 17 accounting subject matter expert within the Group finance close cycle, overseeing the timely and accurate preparation, review, and explanation of IFRS 17 results.
  • Identify and drive improvements in efficiency, quality, and control within IFRS 17-related close activities.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a faster, more automated, and insight-driven close process.
  • Support Finance transformation initiatives, including enhanced reporting, analytics, and management information.

What you’ll bring:

  • An internationally recognized accounting qualification is required, together with a relevant university degree.
  • A minimum of 10 years of accounting experience is required, including at least 5 years in the (re)insurance industry.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with IFRS 17-related operations across P&C and/or Life entities, supported by at least 2 years of practical IFRS 17 experience.
  • Strong technical understanding of IFRS 17 and its interaction with the broader finance close, Group consolidation, and financial statement reporting process.
  • Proven capability in data management and analysis, including experience with Power BI, Power Query, and/or other relevant data management tools.
  • Experience leading and developing finance professionals and a demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-functional colleagues to achieve process and reporting objectives.
  • Highly organized, deadline-oriented, and able to work effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the confidence to engage senior stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to other offices for project and stakeholder engagement.

Skills Required
