The Chief Economist leads the company's economic and industry insight team, which tracks the economy, new and used vehicle sales, supply, prices, retail and fleet demand, consumer credit and auto financing, dealer sentiment, and freight trends to understand the key trends impacting car buying, ownership and next life. The Chief Economist is a key member of the strategy leadership team and contributes to the company's fact base and deep expertise in all aspects of the automotive and transportation industries. The Chief Economist is an industry spokesperson and represents the company and our thought leadership to media and clients. This role is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the company's analysis of complex industry, economic and proprietary data from all the company's businesses and platforms. This position will also provide expert guidance to industry associations, clients, and the financial community. The ideal candidate will serve as a spokesperson, support internal and external clients and Cox Automotive's Finance and Strategy groups as well as demonstrate thought leadership in a way that is truly meaningful to the recipient and more compelling than that of our competition.
The Chief Economist is responsible for managing the Industry Insights function, which is composed of analysts, economists, and subject matter experts and will also rely heavily on others across a complex matrixed organization for ongoing contributions and support. He or she will leverage strong relationship and influencing skills to ensure production of best-in-class analysis and insights.
Additional duties and responsibilities include:
- Provide thought leadership to Cox Automotive senior executives, financial industry, automotive reporters and management from key client groups
- Maintain Cox Automotive's recognition as a premier thought-leader in the automotive industry, offering authoritative and provocative insights
- Identify key trends and forecast future outcomes informing critical business decisions
- Deliver deep insights to senior executives on key industry metrics that will guide the decisions that form the future state of Cox Automotive
- Maintain and evolve Industry Insights deliverables
- Act as a key spokesperson for Cox Automotive and oversee the bench of spokespeople on the Industry Insights team
- Speak as the leading authority of Industry Insights for the automotive industry in partnership with Industry Relations and Communications
- Leverage position to engage with senior leaders in industry
- Support the Strategy and Finance teams with facts and an objective look at opportunities and challenges facing the automotive industry and our business
Skills & Requirements:
- PhD in economics or a related field preferred
- Master's degree in economics or a related field with at least 14+ years related experience, or equivalent applicable experience and training
- 7+ years of experience in a leadership role
- Demonstrated ability to apply economic and statistical theory to complex market problems
- Demonstrated strategic, analytical and reasoning capabilities, with a natural tendency towards thinking creatively and providing new solutions
- Ability to effectively and exceptionally present information to peers, Cox Automotive management, and public groups both in person and in writing
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions with internal and external clients
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical data sets and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
- Proven success in prior leadership roles
- Energetic and positive team player who is flexible and personable with a service-oriented attitude
- Ability to work in a fast paced, complex matrix environment in which attention to detail is expected
- Consistently delivers accurate, high-quality work on time and within scope
- Creates a positive, inclusive team culture that drives collaboration and high performance
- Automotive industry experience preferred
