As an Underwriting Supervisor, you will lead a team of underwriters while driving operational excellence, quality, and performance across the underwriting function. You'll serve as a coach, mentor, and business partner, ensuring consistent underwriting decisions, exceptional service, and achievement of departmental goals.
Schedule Flexibility: Candidates must be flexible to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule based on business volume. Initially, this will likely involve working occasional Saturday shifts during peak periods or month-end closing. As our operations expand, this role has the potential to transition into a permanent Tuesday through Saturday shift.
Qualifications
What you'll do:
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of up to 15 underwriters, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Provide onboarding, training, and ongoing coaching to both new and tenured team members.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, performance discussions, and semi-annual performance reviews.
- Create and execute development plans to strengthen individual performance and support career growth.
- Interview, hire, and onboard new team members to build a high-performing underwriting team.
- Prepare and deliver performance improvement plans and corrective action when necessary.
Performance & Operations Management
- Monitor individual and team performance against key performance indicators (KPIs), productivity standards, and service-level expectations.
- Analyze performance trends and provide actionable feedback to improve results.
- Report team productivity and operational metrics to leadership on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Monitor attendance and schedule adherence to ensure adequate staffing and operational efficiency.
- Review and approve employee timecards and time-off requests.
Underwriting Quality & Compliance
- Perform quality assurance reviews to ensure underwriting decisions are accurate, consistent, and compliant with company policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance on complex underwriting scenarios and support escalations as needed.
- Interpret and communicate underwriting policies, procedures, and guideline updates to ensure consistent application across the team.
- Ensure adherence to quality, compliance, and risk management standards.
Process Improvement & Change Management
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, increase efficiency, and enhance the customer experience.
- Assist in documenting and maintaining underwriting processes, procedures, and best practices.
- Support the implementation of new processes, technologies, and operational initiatives.
- Partner with leadership to drive continuous improvement efforts and operational excellence.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate closely with Sales, Operations, Quality Assurance, Training, and other business partners to ensure a seamless customer experience.
- Communicate underwriting performance, trends, challenges, and recommendations to leadership and key stakeholders.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on underwriting processes, guidelines, and operational best practices.
What you'll bring:
- Minimum of 5 years mortgage underwriting experience (mortgage or home equity)
- Minimum of 3 years experience in a leadership position
- Ability to meet deadlines and achieve goals
- Strong PC skills, including the Google product line: "Google sheets" and "Google docs"
- Bachelor's Degree Preferred, but not required
- Must have strong verbal and written communication skills for communication with all levels of staff.
- Must be able to stay organized while working on multiple projects and tasks.
- Possess the ability to learn and adapt quickly
- Dependable and ability to work independently
