The Underwriting Consultant plays a key role in achieving OptumRx's sales and renewal financial targets, supporting the Health Plan Reseller Underwriting Team. This position is designed for a self directed, highly adaptable professional who performs well in ambiguous, fast moving environments with limited standardization and a high volume of ad hoc requests.
Success in this role requires comfort operating without defined SOPs, the ability to independently assess priorities, and solid judgment to deliver accurate, defensible financial work amid evolving requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Independently support new business and renewal RFPs by applying deep knowledge of OptumRx solutions, competitive dynamics, industry trends, and internal financial metrics
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting partner to Sales and Account Management by proactively identifying risks, opportunities, and financial implications
  • Deliver accurate, timely pricing analyses in an environment characterized by frequent change, incomplete information, and evolving client requirements
  • Manage and respond to a high volume of ad hoc health plan requests, balancing speed, accuracy, and stakeholder expectations
  • Operate effectively without formal SOPs, using sound judgment to determine the appropriate approach, assumptions, and level of detail
  • Communicate financial impact and recommendations clearly to both technical and non technical stakeholders
  • Own quality control of work products, ensuring high attention to detail across models, assumptions, and client-facing materials
  • Continuously adapt priorities as business needs shift, maintaining accountability for deliverables with minimal oversight

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.
Required Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in financial pharmacy benefit management, underwriting, or related financial analysis roles
  • Experience supporting client-facing pricing, consulting, or negotiation discussions
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office
  • Demonstrated success in self directed roles with limited structure or predefined processes
  • Demonstrated solid financial and business acumen, with the ability to make sound decisions under ambiguity
  • Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities and ad hoc work streams simultaneously
  • Proven exceptional attention to detail and ownership of end to end deliverables
  • Proven solid written and verbal communication skills across multiple levels of complex organizations

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working directly with Health Plan clients, particularly in non standard or customized arrangements
  • Experience supporting or owning P&L, margin, or financial guarantee accountability
  • Background in environments with frequent reprioritization, incomplete data, or compressed timelines

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $72,800 to $130,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
