This undergraduate internship is a full-time position Summer-Fall 2027 (May or June through December) on site in Rochester, Minnesota.
The Division of Engineering develops custom medical devices for physicians and researchers at Mayo Clinic. Our devices span the patient care spectrum from bench top research to patient bedside. This includes novel applications of deep brain stimulation, biosensor development, tissue engineering, organ assist devices, and surgical instruments.
The Microfabrication Laboratory seeks an undergraduate student in engineering, materials science, or a related technical field who is interested in gaining hands-on experience in microfabrication and medical-device development. The intern will support the fabrication, testing, and characterization of medical microdevices such as thin-film electrode arrays, microfluidic devices, and other microsystems. Project assignments may vary based on active projects and laboratory needs, providing exposure to a range of fabrication technologies, device applications, and clinical problems.
The intern will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team under the guidance of experienced engineers and laboratory staff and develop increasing independence as their technical skills grow. The internship is intended to provide practical engineering experience while allowing the student to apply concepts learned through undergraduate coursework.
Assignments may include:
- Supporting fabrication and characterization of microdevices and test structures
- Performing laboratory experiments using established procedures
- Collecting, organizing, and analyzing experimental data
- Assisting with troubleshooting and process improvement activities
- Creating or modifying CAD drawings and device layouts
- Helping assemble and test prototypes
- Documenting experimental procedures, results, and observations
- Participating in project discussions and engineering design reviews
- Learning appropriate laboratory, safety, and quality procedures
The intern will receive instruction and mentoring appropriate to their level of experience and will progressively take on additional responsibility as their skills develop.
QualificationsThe incumbent must be enrolled in an engineering, management information systems, or other technology-related degree program from an accredited college or university and have completed a minimum of four semesters – or the equivalent – of instruction toward their degree.
