The Role

Summary:

The SVP Employment Law Counsel leads our employment law function, drives proactive risk mitigation, advises on workforce-related projects, and partners with HR to shape policies and practices that ensures compliance and supports the Company’s growth. 

Essential Job Functions may include:

Employment Law Counseling:

  • Advise on a broad array of HR and employment law issues, including reduction-in-forces, restructurings, retention, investigations, employment claims, hiring, immigration, background checks, payroll practices, discipline, termination, leaves of absence and disability accommodations, unemployment and more.

  • Develop and advise on employment agreements related to compensation, confidentiality, severance, and retention.

  • Advise and participate in workplace trainings educating managers and HR professionals on a variety of topics.

  • Comfort advising on multi-state employment issues.

HR Compliance Management & Risk Reduction:

  • Track emerging state and federal employment laws. Spearhead cross-organizational implementation of new policies and processes to ensure compliance.

  • Conduct an ongoing review and assessment of employee practices and procedures for effectiveness and compliance.

  • Provides oversight on the development of a compliance program and calendar for HR.

  • Guide the department to deliver effective, controlled, and compliant HR processes.

  • Partner with HR to advise on investigations, employment litigation, and federal/state agency matters. 

  • Suggest proactive strategies to anticipate and mitigate potential legal problems within the organization to decrease organizational risk.

  • Advise on HR-related legal disputes, both before and after litigation is filed.

HR Policies & Best Practices:

  • Oversee Employee Handbook policy changes and or updates.

  • Guide and oversee workplace policies and practices for all workplace sites.

Other Related Duties:

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages staff and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year College or University.

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Fifteen (15) + years of progressive Legal experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

None Required

Work Complexity:

Problems and issues faced are difficult and complex, and may require understanding of broader set of issues. Problems typically involve consideration of multiple issues and understanding of the financial/mortgage industry. Problems are typically solved through drawing from prior experience and analysis of issues.

Work Environment:
