The Way Back Support Service (TWBSS) is a suicide after-care program designed to provide practical, compassionate support to people who have been discharged from hospital following a suicide attempt or crisis. The program aims to reduce the risk of suicide by offering coordinated, person-centred care that promotes safety, connection, and hope.
About the roleAs a Support Coordinator, you’ll play a vital role in supporting people referred to Wellways by the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) and the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (C&HHHS).
You’ll work alongside individuals and their families to:
Provide non-clinical, recovery-focused support in the first three months following a suicide attempt
Help participants develop and implement personalised safety and support plans
Coordinate care and connect people to essential community and clinical services
Build social connections and empower participants to engage with their recovery journey
This is a community-based role that will require travel throughout the Cairns and Hinterland region.
About youYou’re a compassionate, proactive professional who is confident engaging with people in crisis and helping them access the right supports. You bring a strong understanding of suicide prevention and mental health recovery, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
You’ll also bring:
Experience working with people with mental health challenges or those at risk of suicide
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to maintain boundaries while providing empathetic, person-centred care

- Relevant qualifications or commensurate experience in working in a support role for people with mental health conditions
- An understanding of recovery principles and/or strengths-based principles
- Evidence of the Right to work in Australia
