Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.
We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,700 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll help build the intelligent orchestration layer connecting Cash, Yield, Lending and broader Airwallex product surfaces into one unified financial experience for businesses. You’ll shape the architecture and long-term technical vision of backend systems, helping define engineering strategy and framework choices for the Yield squad.
Own the delivery of core investment workflows, including client signup, investment and redemption, from design through production.
Build and maintain mission-critical financial infrastructure, including reconciliation controls, unit registries and investment ledgers.
Write high-quality, testable code focused on reliability and maintainability, while integrating with external investment providers.
Raise engineering standards across observability, API design, automated testing and robust integration rails.
Partner with Product, Infrastructure, Design and other teams to deliver reliable experiences for businesses.
You'll work from our Sydney office on Monday, Thursday and Friday.
What we're looking forEssentials
7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
A bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering or a related field.
Experience solving distributed-systems challenges involving scalability, consistency and latency.
Strong backend engineering experience. Our current stack includes Kotlin with Vert.x, Temporal and Kafka, but we’re open to engineers who’ve worked primarily in other languages.
Experience with automated testing and software quality processes.
Experience with cloud technologies such as GCP or AWS, including Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience integrating observability tooling such as Splunk, New Relic, Prometheus or Grafana.
Experience designing, building and operating reliable production systems end to end.
Preferred
Experience in financial services, lending, payments or credit products.
Experience building SaaS products or platform offerings.
Experience with investment workflows, ledgers, reconciliation or other financial infrastructure.
Experience working in an early-stage or greenfield product area.
You're comfortable owning the roadmap yourself.
You're comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and moving quickly anyway.
You hold yourself to a high standard even when no one is watching. Quality and accountability aren't external expectations, they're internal ones.
You're comfortable with ambiguity. Give you a problem, not a prescription, and you'll run with it.
You know when to align and when to just decide. Collaboration isn't a way to avoid accountability.
The Business Accounts team is where Cash, Yield, Lending, and the rest of our product suite come together into one unified financial experience for businesses. We're building the intelligent orchestration layer that lets customers move funds between transactional, yield-generating, and lending accounts, optimize liquidity, and respond dynamically to activity across payments, card spend, and collections. The challenge is that this connective layer doesn't exist yet: as our product suite grows, customers need it to feel programmable and automated, not like a patchwork of separate accounts. This is a brand-new team at an early stage, so you'll shape the technical foundations of a core platform from the ground up. If you want ownership building the product that sits at the center of Airwallex's business customer experience, this is where that work happens.
