*This role is open to remote or hybrid candidates (East Coast preference), with hybrid being central to our New York, NY or Charlotte area offices. Must be able to work Eastern Standard Time hours.

As a Staff Engineer at Bankrate, you sit at the intersection of deep technical expertise and strategic business thinking — the rare engineer who can see both the forest and the trees. You'll architect solutions to complex, cross-team challenges, ensuring every technology decision directly advances Bankrate's goals. That means influencing architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and spotting where emerging technology can unlock growth, efficiency, or a better customer experience — all while keeping systems scalable, secure, and cost-effective.

If you're energized by solving hard problems that matter beyond your immediate team, this role is built for you.

What You’ll Do:

  • Solve complex, mission-critical problems that require cross-team collaboration and deep technical evaluation.
  • Act as a trusted technical consultant and architect for multiple teams within an industry group.
  • Partner with product and business stakeholders to align technical direction with measurable outcomes and company goals.
  • Explore and evaluate emerging technologies, identifying opportunities to leverage new tools, frameworks, or paradigms that create business value.
  • Lead technical design, planning, and execution for large-scale initiatives that span multiple systems in their product domains.
  • Assess and execute trade-off decisions between performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost.
  • Define and deliver technical stories that improve the integrity, performance, and long-term sustainability of shared systems.
  • Conduct architectural reviews with the broader Staff group and proactively identify areas for simplification, modernization, and risk reduction.
  • Mentor and develop engineers through design reviews, pair programming, and technical coaching.
  • Champion consistency in design patterns, operational excellence, and engineering best practices across teams.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous learning and innovation — modeling curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Demonstrated advanced expertise in multiple software engineering disciplines and ability to apply that expertise to solve complex, cross-domain problems.
  • Proven record of architecting and delivering scalable, resilient systems that align with long-term business and product strategy.
  • Strong systems thinking - able to connect architectural decisions to operational, security, and organizational outcomes.
  • Architecting and maintaining full-stack TypeScript systems, leveraging advanced type systems to enforce runtime correctness, schema validation, and end-to-end type safety across API boundaries.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to simplify complex ideas, influence decisions, and align diverse stakeholders.
  • Deep expertise in React and modern web architectures, focused on building scalable design systems, managing complex state across micro-frontends, and optimizing critical rendering paths for high-volume platforms.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture principles, modern cloud infrastructure, and secure design practices.
  • Holistic ownership of the Node.js/TypeScript ecosystem across server-side and client-side runtimes, establishing shared patterns, tooling defaults, and testing strategies that multiply team-wide productivity.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and commitment to continuous learning - proactive exploration of emerging technologies and assessing their business relevance.
  • Designing, versioning, and scaling resilient REST and GraphQL microservices, ensuring loose coupling, backward compatibility, and clean domain boundaries across distributed teams.
  • Skilled at mentoring and elevating engineering talent through constructive feedback, design guidance, pair programming, and modeling technical excellence.
  • Proven track record designing cloud-native solutions on AWS (ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3) using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), with an emphasis on system fault tolerance, cost optimization, and automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Implementing enterprise-wide observability, monitoring, and alerting frameworks (e.g., New Relic, CloudWatch) to establish SLOs, shorten incident response times, and guarantee high availability for critical business workflows.
  • Operates with autonomy and accountability, influencing technical direction across multiple teams and driving alignment toward shared outcomes.

Who We Are:

Bankrate is where Americans go to get the best price on life's most important financial decisions. By combining proprietary data, advanced technology, and deep market coverage, Bankrate helps consumers compare options and make confident financial choices across mortgages, credit cards, savings, and more. As a rate provider to the Federal Reserve and the benchmark relied upon by major publishers and policymakers nationwide, Bankrate's rate data is the national standard. This commitment to precision is reflected across all its products. In mortgages, proprietary auction technology puts lenders in real-time competition on price alone, consistently delivering rates in the lowest 10% in the country. For deposits, the platform features exclusively top-tier rates in the top 10% nationally, while its credit card coverage encompasses more than 90% of the market by volume. Founded by a journalist, Bankrate remains dedicated to its founding mission of transparency, honest information, and real competition — helping to make the American dream more affordable for everyone.
