The Company
PayPal has been revolutionizing commerce globally for more than 25 years. Creating innovative experiences that make moving money, selling, and shopping simple, personalized, and secure, PayPal empowers consumers and businesses in approximately 200 markets to join and thrive in the global economy.
We operate a global, two-sided network at scale that connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers. We help merchants and consumers connect, transact, and complete payments, whether they are online or in person. PayPal is more than a connection to third-party payment networks. We provide proprietary payment solutions accepted by merchants that enable the completion of payments on our platform on behalf of our customers.
We offer our customers the flexibility to use their accounts to purchase and receive payments for goods and services, as well as the ability to transfer and withdraw funds. We enable consumers to exchange funds more safely with merchants using a variety of funding sources, which may include a bank account, a PayPal or Venmo account balance, PayPal and Venmo branded credit products, a credit card, a debit card, certain cryptocurrencies, or other stored value products such as gift cards, and eligible credit card rewards. Our PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom products also make it safer and simpler for friends and family to transfer funds to each other. We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.
Our beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day. We live each day guided by our core values of Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, and Wellness. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do – and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.
Job Summary:
This role owns the software Credit Production Engineering runs on. It delivers complete solutions across all phases of the SDLC for CPE's internal platforms — the knowledge base, the services behind it, and the automation the team depends on during live triage — and is accountable for those codebases as products: design, code review, tests, deployment and ongoing upkeep. It operates with little day-to-day supervision, guides engineers writing automation alongside their operational work, and applies technical best practices to build-versus-configure decisions within its own area.Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:
- Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
- Advises immediate management on project-level issues
- Guides junior engineers
- Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
- Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications:
Responsibilities:
- Deliver complete solutions across all phases of the SDLC for CPE's internal platforms, based on priorities set with the CPE manager.
- Own CPE's tooling codebases as products — apply and uphold code review, testing and release practices for them, and be the named owner accountable for their state.
- Carry the knowledge base platform from pre-production to production: monitoring, backup and restore, documented ownership, and the operational layer a service needs once a team depends on it daily.
- Design, build and operate new services that reduce the team's toil on repetitive and manual work, including correlating operational signals that today are handled individually.
- Own the PostgreSQL schema and data layer behind CPE's retrieval platform — schema design, migrations, roles and grants, indexing and query performance.
- Advise CPE management on project-level technical issues, including build-versus-configure and sequencing decisions.
- Review code from, and provide technical guidance to, engineers who write automation alongside their operational work.
- Partner with engineering teams outside CPE to obtain the service topology and dependency knowledge CPE's tooling depends on.
Additional Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ownership of a production codebase — not only writing code, but accountability for its design, review, tests, deployment and upkeep over time.
- Working fluency in both Shell scripting, Python and TypeScript. Most of CPE's tooling are Shell scripts and Python; the MCP is in TypeScript.
- Depth in databases: schema design, migrations, roles and grants, indexing and query performance, and running a database in production including backup and restore.
- Production experience with cloud infrastructure — AWS and GCP are both in play — including deployment and observability.
- Operational credibility with on-call engineers: prior time on a rotation, and an understanding of the work from the inside. This role is not in the on-call rotation, but is the escalation path for the services it owns.
- Ability to drive a technical design across teams where the role holds no authority.
- Comfort with ambiguity — much of this work has no precedent inside the team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PostgreSQL + pgvector or another vector store — embeddings, similarity search, index tuning.
- Retrieval systems or LLM tooling.
- Managed Postgres at scale — Cloud SQL, RDS, Aurora.
- Alerting and monitoring platforms — Datadog, Splunk, PagerDuty.
- Event correlation, anomaly detection, or time-series analysis.
About the team:
Credit Production Engineering runs 24/7 follow-the-sun support for PayPal's Financial Services platform — roughly 20 site reliability engineers across North America and APAC, with three structured handoffs a day. Over the past year the team has built its own operational tooling: a knowledge base over runbooks, incident history and alert events, backed by services the on-call triage tooling queries directly. It works and it is in daily use. This role is the first one dedicated to it.
