The Senior Food Scientist is an experienced professional who provides technical leadership, competence and experience to lead and/or support multiple global and regional projects with an emphasis on new product development, product line extensions, product/process improvements, cost reduction, margin improvement, or other work as assigned. The individual in this role will contribute to the delivery of business objectives through the application of advance, specialized technical knowledge and will serve as a technical mentor and resource to colleagues and management.

Key Accountabilities
Technical Expertise

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities to drive business growth.
  • Provide technical expertise to effectively lead new product development, margin enhancement, quality improvement and ingredient technology projects from prototype to completion.
  • Apply advanced scientific knowledge to solve technical hurdles and issues relative to products and processes.
  • Leverage vendor technical core competencies as a resource network for product development.
  • Ensure procedures and documentation. Ensuring all necessary information is documented and available for seamless transition to production and QA.
  • Act as a technical mentor, training junior scientists on technical procedures and processes.
  • Keep current with advancements in ingredient technology and food science by taking advantage of technical journals, attending technical presentations by suppliers, and networking with colleagues and experts in the field.


Project Management

  • Conceive, plan, design and conduct independent and/or collaborative activities on ingredients, formulations and processes related to the development of new and improved products, analyzing experiments and the results to broaden scientific understanding.
  • Serve as technical Project Leader: construct effective project plans, identify risks and corresponding mitigation plans, in partnership with relevant internal or external stakeholders to provide solutions to a wide range of projects.
  • Complete all relevant documentation to allow the business to claim any grants or tax relief available to them.
  • Oversee junior Scientist's/Technician's project activities.


Communication

  • Maintain strong relationships and communicate internally and externally with project team functions and any other associated departments.
  • Provide scientific direction and feedback to others sharing knowledge throughout the organization and with major suppliers.
  • Present findings and solutions professionally and confidently at a level which is easily understood.
  • Regularly update Senior Leadership Team as to the status of projects and any change to key milestones.
  • Keep abreast of trends, ingredients and new product introductions, sharing relevant information with the rest of the Product Development team.


Customer and Supplier Support :

  • Interface with customers, suppliers and co-packers as required to meet department and Company objectives:


o Realize customer needs by developing new concepts, prototypes and products.
o Lead raw material sourcing, evaluation, improvement and approval activities with Purchasing functions and/or suppliers.
o Support Sales and Marketing in developing and delivering effective customer presentations.
o Provide technical support to Operations, QA, Procurement, Engineering and other departments, as assigned, in identifying and solving product design and manufacturing issues.
Qualifications:

  • BSc. or MSc. in Food Science or food-related sciences discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated successful work experience in food product development


Key Competencies:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational skills with an aptitude for creativity, innovation, and ability to resolve challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage timelines for self and on behalf of others.
  • Strong understanding of the global business environment, customers, competition and the importance of internal and external engagement in the successful development of new products.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience completing projects in tight timelines using good experimental design techniques and practices.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, dealing with both internal and external customers, including cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in ingredient technology, food science and food processing required including:


o Knowledge of GMP, HACCP, Food Safety, Product Development Cycle
o Knowledge of food preparation, consumer product testing, sensory testing and manufacturing operations procedures.
o Sound knowledge of food ingredients, and the interaction with processing and packaging.
o Ability to use statistical techniques to analyze and present data.

Compensation Package : $70,000.00 - $101,100.00 CAD annually + bonus eligibility
The above reflects the target compensation range for the position at the time of posting. Hiring compensation will be determined based on experience, skill set, education/training, and other organizational needs.
