Job Overview
As a Solution Architect, you will design and guide end-to-end solutions that support ING’s banking products, customer processes, and regulatory capabilities within the Reference and Target Architectures provided by Enterprise and Domain Architects. Working closely with business and engineering stakeholders, you will translate requirements into scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions while ensuring alignment with ING’s architectural standards and long-term technology direction.
You will contribute to the evolution of banking capabilities across multiple domains and help drive modernization, transformation, and simplification initiatives.
What You'll Do
- Design end-to-end solutions across multiple business domains, systems, and platforms, aligned with business, operational, regulatory, and technology objectives.
- Collaborate with business and engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.
- Conduct architecture assessments, solution evaluations, and option analyses to support decision-making.
- Contribute to architecture roadmaps, transformation initiatives, and technical debt reduction.
- Produce and maintain architecture artifacts, standards, and supporting documentation.
- Provide architecture governance and implementation guidance to ensure successful delivery.
- Contribute to architecture communities and best practices across ING.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as a Solution Architect delivering end-to-end solutions in complex enterprise environments.
- Strong understanding of modern architecture principles and patterns, including microservices, APIs, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), distributed systems, and integration architectures.
- Experience working across multiple domains, systems, and stakeholders to deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.
- Experience conducting architecture assessments, solution evaluations, technology option analyses, and architecture transformation initiatives.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance business, operational, regulatory, and technology considerations.
- Experience designing solutions that support financial products, customer journeys, and business capabilities.
- Experience with customer data management, information architecture, Master Data Management (MDM), or data integration patterns.
- Experience designing solutions within financial services domains such as Payments, Lending, Deposits, Investments, AML/KYC, Collections, Customer Data, or Digital Channels.
Minimum Qualifications
Must Have
- Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience, including experience as a Solution Architect, Technical Lead, or similar solution design role.
- Strong engineering background and understanding of modern software architecture principles.
- Experience designing end-to-end solutions in complex enterprise environments.
- Experience working in Agile, incremental, or hybrid delivery environments.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively across business and technology teams in a global and cross-cultural environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience integrating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and internally developed solutions.
- Familiarity with architecture modeling approaches such as ArchiMate, UML, BPMN, C4, or similar frameworks.
- Experience working with regulatory, compliance, or policy-driven solution design.

Skills Required
- Minimum of 5 years web or software development experience and at least 2 years in a lead or architect role
- Software development experience (practice and leadership), preferably Java-based enterprise systems
- Experience with containerization and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Knowledge of RHEL, JBoss, OpenShift, Java Enterprise Applications, Spring and Spring Boot
- Knowledge of Public Cloud and related tooling
- Knowledge of Oracle Database systems
- Familiarity with relational databases and NoSQL databases
- Experience in application design, architectural modeling (C4, ArchiMate, UML, ERDs) and documenting technical solutions
- Knowledge of distributed systems and microservice architecture patterns (DDD, event-driven, SOA, splitting monoliths)
- Understanding of networking principles, security concepts, testing best practices, and modern software development practices
- Knowledge of automation and DevOps methods
- Strong communication, presentation, and documentation skills in English for global stakeholder coordination
- Action-oriented, decisive, hands-on attitude and strong analytical curiosity
- Ability to work well in cross-cultural teams and willingness for international travel
- Experience in Banking/FinTech
- Experience with regulatory, compliance, or policy matters related to systems design
