Job Description

Do you have a passion for innovative ideas and groundbreaking discoveries? With over $1 billion invested annually in R&D, at Thermo Fisher Scientific you’ll help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges, from giving cancer patients hope, ensuring safe drinking water and helping law enforcement tackle cases through forensics. We empower our teams to put science into meaningful action and give our R&D colleagues the autonomy, resources and tools they need to take science a step beyond.

As a Solid-State Scientist III at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., you will use your expertise in solid-state characterization and analytical method validation to advance drug substance development. Collaborate with world-class teams and ensure our methodologies meet regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform solid-state characterization of drug substances and drug products using techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), FTIR, particle size analysis, and polarized light microscopy.

  • Investigate polymorphism, crystallinity, amorphous content, particle morphology, and other solid-state properties relevant to pharmaceutical development.

  • Develop and validate analytical methods for solid-state and physical characterization, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines (e.g., ICH).

  • Analyze, interpret, and compile experimental data; prepare technical reports, presentations, and summaries for cross-functional teams and regulatory submissions.

  • Collaborate with formulation development, process development, and quality teams to support drug development programs.

  • Stay updated on advancements in solid-state characterization technologies and apply standard methodologies to improve experimental workflows.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field with a focus on solid-state chemistry and/or analytical methods.

  • Hands-on experience with solid-state analytical techniques, including XRPD, DSC, TGA, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and microscopy (academic or industrial).

  • Basic understanding of polymorphism, amorphous systems, crystallinity, and their implications in drug development.

  • Experience in method development, validation, and troubleshooting for analytical techniques.

  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills, proficient in software tools such as High Score Plus, Trios, or related programs.

  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and time-management skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in pharmaceutical solid-state analysis through internships, academic research, or industry.

  • Familiarity with ICH guidelines and regulatory expectations for method validation and solid-state characterization.

  • Knowledge of basic formulation and drug product development concepts.
