Software Engineer Intern - Stem Fair

Position Summary 

Red Cat Holding is looking for a motivated Software Engineer Intern to support our engineering team working on the ground control station experience for our drone platforms. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn real-world software engineering — including C++, Android development, and real-time systems — while contributing to features used in actual drone missions. 

You'll work alongside experienced engineers on problems like: how do you keep a live data connection stable between a drone and a tablet? How do you debug an app that's running slow or crashing? How do you build something that has to work reliably in the field, not just in a lab? 

No prior drone or aerospace experience needed — we're looking for strong fundamentals and curiosity, with mentorship built in. 

What You'll Do 

• Assist in building and testing features for our Android-based ground control application, under the guidance of senior engineers 

• Help debug issues in native C++ code, Android apps, or communication between the two 

• Learn how drones and ground control software communicate in real time (MAVLink protocol, networking basics) 

• Support testing and validation of new features, including field-testing support when available 

• Contribute to build tooling, documentation, or automation tasks as needed 

• Participate in code reviews and team discussions to build good engineering habits early 

What We're Looking For 

• Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field 

• Coursework or personal projects involving C++ (Java/Kotlin, Python, or other languages also valued) 

• Strong problem-solving and debugging instincts — comfortable digging into why something isn't working 

• Genuine interest in robotics, drones, or real-time/embedded systems 

• Comfortable working in a Linux-based development environment (or willing to learn quickly) 

Nice to Have (not required) 

• Exposure to Android development or mobile app projects 

• Familiarity with Qt/QML or other UI frameworks 

• Interest in networking, hardware interfaces, or systems programming 

• Any personal or academic project involving drones, robotics, or embedded systems 

Working Conditions 

• Primarily computer-based work in an office/lab environment 

• Occasional participation in field testing or facility walk-throughs may be available for hands-on exposure
