Expedia B2B is the B2B arm of Expedia Group. We bring Expedia Group's innovative technology and distribution solutions to partners across the world. These businesses include global financial institutions, corporate managed travel, offline travel agents, global travel suppliers (like major airlines) and many more.
Our Madrid engineering team is at the heart of building and scaling the backend systems that power these partnerships. As a Software Development Engineer III, you will be an influential individual contributor — mentoring peers, leading complex technical initiatives, and helping shape the architecture of services used by partners globally.
In this role, you will:
Design, develop, and maintain complex backend services and APIs consumed across business units, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and clean code principles.
Lead and clarify code evolution through thorough code reviews, applying knowledge of software design patterns, data structures, and computer science fundamentals.
Identify and resolve areas of inefficiency in code or system operations, proposing and implementing meaningful improvements.
Develop and test complex or non-routine software applications, ensuring they are observable, testable, and meet design and SLA requirements.
Collaborate proactively with peers across the organisation to build an understanding of cross-team dependencies and resolve shared challenges.
Mentor and support the growth of more junior engineers by sharing knowledge, new technical skills, and best practices.
Contribute to a community of practice, participating in and driving knowledge-sharing initiatives within the engineering organisation.
Compile and present technical findings, root cause analyses (RCAs), and operational initiatives to stakeholders through written or verbal communication.
Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to develop holistic solutions that align with business needs and improve efficiency across organisational boundaries.
Experience and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field and 5+ years of professional software development experience; or a Master's degree in a related technical field and 3+ years of experience; or equivalent related professional experience.
Proficiency in Java or Kotlin, with hands-on experience across a minimum of three programming languages throughout your career.
Experience maintaining and operating multiple software products in production environments, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident resolution within established SLAs.
Experience designing distributed systems and building RESTful APIs for consumption across teams or business units.
Ability to write clean, maintainable, and modular code using software design principles, data structures, and design patterns.
Experience leading code reviews and upholding technical standards within an engineering team.
Proficient communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred:
Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems (e.g., Apache Kafka) and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS).
Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
Working knowledge of relational and non-relational databases (e.g., MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis).
Familiarity with observability and monitoring tooling (e.g., Datadog, Splunk).
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
