The Software Development Engineer III position is part of the Consumer Payments team within Expedia Global Payments, under the Travel foundations org. This team builds and maintains critical systems that power backend APIs for consumer and B2B payment processing, administrative tools for payment configuration, and support for a variety of payment methods across the platform.
Our services are designed with security, scalability, and availability in mind, supporting credit card processing and payment routing at global scale. As an engineer on this team, you'll apply your passion for backend development, cloud computing, and modern engineering practices to solve real-world challenges that impact millions of travelers and partners worldwide. We are looking for an engineer who demonstrates strong ownership, follows through on commitments, and takes pride in building reliable systems that perform well in production.
In this role, you will:
Design, build, and maintain scalable backend payment services that support Expedia’s global travel platform
Apply software design principles, data structures and/or design patterns and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions
Implement secure data handling practices to protect payment information and meet compliance standards
Recommend and apply architectural patterns or GenAI capabilities to improve system design and innovation
Enhance service reliability through observability, automation, and continuous operational improvements
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact features aligned with Expedia’s strategic goals
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or Master's in a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience
5+ years of experience in backend software development, working with cloud-based and distributed systems at scale
Proficiency in Java or Kotlin, with hands-on experience integrating services with relational and NoSQL databases
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure/test automation, and delivering features in Agile development environments
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working on payment platforms or implementing backend services leveraging GenAI technologies
Experience contributing to multiple multi-quarter, cross-team projects
Experience supporting complex distributed systems in production through monitoring, debugging, incident resolution, and root-cause analysis
Demonstrated experience designing and deploying scalable services on AWS
A Master's degree in a related technical field

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years software engineering building and operating high-scale production backend services, including shipping Gen AI and agentic systems
- Hands-on proficiency in at least one modern programming language and core software engineering practices, including system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling for AI-enabled services
- Familiarity with distributed cloud-native engineering at scale (AWS, GCP, or Azure), microservices, API-driven design, SQL/NoSQL databases, and data streaming/processing (Kafka, Flink, Spark)
- Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants and agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) and applying AI-assisted SDLC practices with prompt/context management and human-in-the-loop review
- Experience building, monitoring, and debugging LLM and multi-agent applications with frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, Langfuse, or equivalent
- RAG architecture experience and familiarity with data orchestration frameworks (e.g., LlamaIndex) and vector databases (e.g., Pinecone)
- Exposure to LLM providers such as OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic
- Track record automating and reimagining manual operational processes with agentic systems
- Experience integrating AI/ML solutions or LLM models into scalable backend services with observability and cost-awareness
- Experience with graph/sequence modeling or entity resolution at scale and device/behavioral signals
- Experience with cloud cost/performance tuning and capacity planning
- Marketplace, travel, or e-commerce experience
- Ability to work in Austin, TX with in-office presence at least three days per week; no relocation assistance provided
