We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research & Product Development Engineer to join the business.

This is a newly created role to support Royal IHC's strategic objectives within the Offshore Energy sector and to further strengthen our focus on innovation and technology development. The successful candidate will lead the development, evaluation and implementation of innovative engineering solutions, acting as a technical expert within multidisciplinary teams and driving innovation from concept through to deployment. The role will also contribute to our long-term technology roadmap, support intellectual property development and provide technical mentorship across the organisation.


You will be responsible for:
  • Identify emerging technologies, industry trends and opportunities
  • Support in the development of business cases.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and proof-of-concept activities.
  • Develop and maintain technology roadmaps.
  • Lead research initiatives.
  • Contribute to patents, publications and IP management.
  • Present at trade shows and conferences
  • Lead design, development and validation of engineering solutions.
  • Translate business and customer requirements into specifications.
  • Develop models, simulations and engineering analyses.
  • Oversee prototype design, testing and evaluation.
  • Drive performance and optimisation of existing products.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring
  • Manage R&D work packages and technical projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Quality, Safety and Compliance
  • Mentor graduate and junior engineers.
  • Share technical knowledge and lessons learned.
  • Contribute to engineering standards and processes.
Job requirements:
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in a multi-disciplinary design environment.
  • In depth knowledge and experience in  design, manufacture and commissioning of some or all of the following:  Sub Sea Vehicles, Cable lay equipment, Pipe lay equipment, LARS and bespoke onshore and offshore handling equipment.
  • Up to date  knowledge of relevant technologies ( eg materials, hydraulics) and engineering design techniques (eg FEA, design codes, International standards etc).
  • Experience of dealing with customers in technical discussions and supporting the project management and commercial teams in negotiations
  • Awareness and appreciation of market trends and emerging technologies relevant to Royal IHC Ltd products and services
  • Flexible and knowledgeable, able to work across disciplines and share ideas. .
  • Analytical and methodical approach to problem solving with the required experience to make key decisions throughout the project.
  • Good attention to detail and a proven completer/finisher.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.

Skills Required

  • Educated to an Engineering degree level or equivalent
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in a multi-disciplinary design environment
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in design, manufacture and commissioning of subsea vehicles and handling equipment
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant technologies and engineering design techniques
  • Ability to provide technical guidance to the project engineering team
  • Ability to provide expertise during assembly, commissioning and installation phases
