Position Summary:

The Senior Infrastructure Automation Engineer is primarily responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, enhancing, and engineering enterprise infrastructure automation solutions in a large, complex on-premises private cloud environment. Core platforms include Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform (AAP), VMware Aria Automation, and VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator, including JavaScript-based orchestration workflows. The position supports reliable Day 0 provisioning, Day 1 configuration, and Day 2 infrastructure lifecycle operations through automation, scripting, integrations, and Infrastructure as Code practices.

As a secondary responsibility, the engineer provides hands-on systems engineering expertise across VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, and associated compute, networking, storage, and virtualization infrastructure. The engineer owns complex technical problems, partners with enterprise and division teams, supports production incidents, and improves operational standards, documentation, and service reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve existing Ansible AAP and VMware Aria Automation workflows, service catalog offerings, deployment templates, and orchestration integrations.
  • Support automated provisioning, configuration, patching, maintenance, validation, and decommissioning of on-premises virtual machines, operating systems, and infrastructure services.
  • Investigate failed automation jobs and workflow executions; isolate root causes across credentials, permissions, inventories, connectivity, APIs, configuration, and dependent platforms.
  • Maintain and enhance Ansible playbooks, roles, collections, inventories, job templates, and workflow templates for Windows Server, Linux, and infrastructure platforms.
  • Read, debug, modify, and test JavaScript actions and workflows within VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator, including JSON handling, variables, logging, exceptions, and REST API calls.
  • Maintain integrations among AAP, Aria Automation/Orchestrator, vCenter, ServiceNow or comparable ITSM platforms, and other enterprise management systems.
  • Use Git-based version control, peer review, change management, testing, and documented rollback procedures for automation changes.
  • Improve automation observability, error handling, repeatability, performance, security, and operational reliability; identify opportunities to reduce manual intervention.
  • Contribute to automation standards, technical designs, operational runbooks, knowledge transfer, and engineering documentation.
  • Support design, build, configuration, and advanced troubleshooting of VMware vSphere/ESXi, vCenter, and Nutanix AHV private cloud environments.
  • Assist with Nutanix cluster deployment and validation, including Foundation imaging, Prism/AOS, AHV networking, and platform readiness.
  • Perform advanced triage across virtual machines, hypervisors, compute, storage, networking, and hardware; support Level 3 escalations and root-cause analysis.
  • Support infrastructure lifecycle management, including hypervisor and firmware upgrades, maintenance sequencing, image standards, migrations, and rollback planning.
  • Analyze infrastructure capacity, performance, and utilization to support resilient provisioning and automated lifecycle processes
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, server, networking, storage, security, application, and division teams to align engineering solutions with enterprise standards.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours work for maintenance, automation changes, migrations, and production incidents may be required. Role scope is on-premises enterprise infrastructure; public-cloud engineering is not a primary responsibility.

Requirements:

  • 3–5+ years of relevant enterprise infrastructure engineering, infrastructure automation, or systems engineering experience in complex production environments.
  • Hands-on experience supporting Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, including YAML, playbooks, inventories, roles, job templates, and execution troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience supporting VMware Aria Automation and Aria Automation Orchestrator, including troubleshooting and modifying JavaScript workflows and actions.
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs, JSON, authentication and authorization, Git/version control, and automation integration troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of VMware vSphere and vCenter; understanding of Nutanix AHV and on-premises private cloud infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with Windows Server and Linux, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, and infrastructure provisioning and configuration management.
  • Ability to analyze logs, troubleshoot complex multi-system failures, document findings, and independently drive technical issues toward resolution.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, change management, and documentation skills across engineering and operations teams.

Preferred:

  • Advanced Ansible AAP administration, platform updates, reusable automation content, and integration with VMware environments.
  • PowerShell, PowerCLI, Python, or Bash scripting; Infrastructure as Code and automated testing practices.
  • Nutanix Prism, AOS/AHV lifecycle management, Cisco UCS, Cisco Intersight, and enterprise server hardware.
  • VMware vSphere networking (vDS/vSS), HA/DRS, storage integration, snapshots, and cluster operations.
  • Workload migrations, hardware refreshes, performance/capacity analysis, and large-scale infrastructure change initiatives.
  • ServiceNow/ITSM integration and formal incident, problem, and change-management processes.
  • Related college degree preferred; equivalent relevant experience acceptable. Relevant Ansible/Red Hat, VMware, Nutanix, Cisco, or ITIL certifications preferred but not required.
