Senior Systems Engineer I

Duties: Full ownership & responsibility for the intake, planning, execution & delivery of HPC features/epics/project deliverables. Work closely with senior engineers and technical leadership to implement reliable, scalable solutions that support the scientists. Regularly review teammates’ code for correctness, readability, performance & adherence to project standards. Provide constructive feedback & foster a collaborative review culture that emphasizes learning & quality improvement. Identify opportunities to enhance system reliability, performance and operational efficiency.
Requirements: Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related field plus 5 years of experience (or a Master’s degree + 3 years) as a Systems Administrator, Systems Engineer, Systems Analyst, Server Engineer or closely related occupation involving High Performance Computing. Must possess at least 3 years of experience in the following: Taking full responsibility for the planning, execution and delivery of engineering features/epics/project deliverables; Peer code review and peer mentorship; Using Ansible, Terraform or AWS Cloud Formation to define, deploy & maintain infrastructure; Identifying manual infrastructure configurations & proactively converting them to automated IaC solutions; Optimizing IaC for speed, completeness, idempotency & maintainability; Designing & implementing moderately complex systems & architectures; Utilizing Linux/Unix Systems Administration to perform daily system administration tasks; Utilizing Bash & Python to automate repetitive cluster management tasks, write monitoring scripts & develop custom tools; Supporting computational chemistry and molecular modeling software; Translating scientific requirements into HPC infrastructure needs; Using profiling tools & system logs to diagnose hardware, network & software problems affecting large-scale workloads; Involvement in the lifecycle planning of servers; Conducting cost-performance analyses; Building, upgrading & maintaining HPC software stacks; and, creating & maintaining internal HPC documentation, guides, and troubleshooting playbooks. May work from home but must be able to report to New York, New York office at least 2 days per week. Salary is $152,652 to $163,900 per year. Skills Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or closely related field plus 5 years' relevant experience, or Master's degree plus 3 years' experience
- Minimum 5 years' experience as Systems Administrator, Systems Engineer, Systems Analyst, Server Engineer or related with HPC
- At least 3 years' experience taking full responsibility for planning, execution and delivery of engineering features/epics/projects
- At least 3 years' experience performing peer code review and peer mentorship
- Experience using Ansible, Terraform or AWS CloudFormation to define, deploy and maintain infrastructure
- Experience identifying manual infrastructure configurations and converting them to automated IaC solutions
- Experience optimizing IaC for speed, completeness, idempotency and maintainability
- Experience designing and implementing moderately complex systems and architectures
- Linux/Unix systems administration experience for daily system administration tasks
- Proficiency with Bash and Python to automate cluster management tasks, write monitoring scripts and develop tools
- Experience supporting computational chemistry and molecular modeling software
- Ability to translate scientific requirements into HPC infrastructure needs
- Experience using profiling tools and system logs to diagnose hardware, network and software problems affecting large-scale workloads
- Involvement in lifecycle planning of servers and conducting cost-performance analyses
- Experience building, upgrading and maintaining HPC software stacks
- Experience creating and maintaining internal HPC documentation, guides, and troubleshooting playbooks
- Ability to work hybrid and report to New York, NY office at least 2 days per week
