Senior Software Engineer, Search Experience

This hybrid position requires two days per week in the office at the nearest hub.

About this role 

The Search Engineering team at Udemy is responsible for delivering a seamless and innovative discovery experience for learners. By incorporating data-driven decision-making (A/B testing), Machine Learning (ML), and Large Language Models (LLMs), we aim to improve our search platform and integrate advanced AI capabilities. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in optimizing and maintaining microservices to handle high traffic and support integration with sophisticated ML and generative AI solutions. You’ll collaborate closely with data scientists, ML engineers, and product managers to drive the roadmap and enhance the value delivered to our learners.

What you'll be doing

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable microservice architectures that handle high traffic in cloud environments.
• Build and integrate backend solutions to support frontend clients (e.g., REST, GraphQL), microservices owned by other teams, and advanced ML/LLM algorithms.
• Develop and manage search indexing solutions, including full-text and semantic search using vector indices.
• Continuously refactor and optimize systems for robustness, scalability, and performance.
• Drive the end-to-end lifecycle of user-facing features, participating in sprint planning and delivering solutions within two-week cycles.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, Data Scientists and ML Engineers, to design and maintain tooling that accelerates machine learning workflows.
• Contribute to a culture of quality, scalability, and innovation within backend development.

What you’ll have

• 5+ years of hands-on professional experience in backend software development with scalable system design.
• Strong expertise in at least one backend programming language (Kotlin, Java, Python) with a focus on writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
• Experience designing and implementing microservices architectures for distributed systems.
• Exposure to machine learning concepts and experience building data pipelines for ML projects.
• Experience in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and containerization/orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) to build and manage scalable, resilient systems.
• Strong hands-on experience with Elasticsearch, including indexing, scaling, and optimizing for performance and analytics.
• A passion for continuous learning and staying updated on emerging backend and search technologies.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams.

Nice to haves

• Experience with vector databases (e.g., Elasticsearch, Faiss, Milvus) , semantic search techniques and embedding models for enhanced data retrieval.
• Experience with data streaming technologies like Kafka for real-time data processing.
• Experience of data pipelines and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, which are often critical in preparing data for machine learning models.
• Familiarity with Big Data tools (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Hive) for processing large-scale datasets is a plus.
• Experience delivering solutions in Agile/Scrum environments with iterative cycles.
