Job Description SummaryWe are seeking a Senior Staff Cloud Engineer with deep expertise in AWS architecture and the AWS Well‑Architected Framework to lead the design, governance, and optimization of highly available, secure, and scalable cloud platforms. This role combines hands‑on technical leadership, architecture ownership, and cross‑team influence across engineering, security, and operations.
You will play a critical role in defining cloud standards, driving architectural excellence, mentoring engineers, and ensuring cloud workloads meet the highest standards across security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and operational excellence.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Architecture & Design

  • Lead the design and implementation of complex AWS architectures aligned with the AWS Well‑Architected Framework.

  • Own and continuously improve reference architectures, landing zones, and cloud design standards.

  • Conduct Well‑Architected Reviews and drive remediation of identified risks.

  • Guide teams in designing multi‑account, multi‑region, highly available AWS environments.

Platform Engineering & Operations

  • Build and maintain secure, scalable, and resilient cloud platforms using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

  • Design and support network architectures including VPCs, Transit Gateways, Direct Connect, VPN, and hybrid connectivity.

  • Implement observability, monitoring, and operational best practices.

  • Ensure effective incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies.

Security & Compliance

  • Partner closely with Security and Compliance teams to enforce:

    • Least‑privilege IAM models

    • Encryption at rest and in transit

    • Secure networking and account boundaries

  • Support compliance requirements such as HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001, or PCI‑DSS (as applicable).

  • Drive adoption of AWS native security services (GuardDuty, Security Hub, Inspector, Config).

Cost Optimization & Governance

  • Architect solutions with cost efficiency in mind.

  • Establish guardrails using AWS Organizations, SCPs, budgets, and tagging standards.

  • Review usage patterns and proactively recommend cost‑optimization strategies.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Act as a cloud subject‑matter expert and trusted advisor.

  • Mentor senior and junior engineers on cloud architecture and best practices.

  • Collaborate with product, DevOps, SRE, networking, and application teams.

  • Drive cloud strategy and roadmap discussions at the organizational level.

Education Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with a minimum of 12+ years of experience in cloud or infrastructure engineering.

Technical Skills

  • 5+ years of hands‑on AWS experience in production environments.

  • Deep knowledge of the AWS Well‑Architected Framework and its six pillars.

  • Expertise with:

    • AWS compute, storage, and networking services

    • IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager

    • Multi‑account and landing‑zone architectures

  • Expertise in Infrastructure as Code:

    • Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

  • Good understanding of Linux, Windows, and cloud‑native services.

Architecture & Scalability

  • Proven experience designing high‑availability, fault‑tolerant, and scalable systems.

  • Experience with hybrid and on‑prem to AWS migrations.

  • Good troubleshooting and performance‑optimization skills.

  • Facilitates and coaches software engineering team sessions on requirements estimation and alternative approaches to team sizing and estimation. Leads a community of practice around estimation to share best practices among teams

  • Knowledgeable about developments in UX in various contexts, businesses, and industries. Quantifies effectiveness of design choices by gathering data. Drives accountability and adoption.

  • Publishes guidance and documentation to promote adoption of design. Proposes design solutions based on research and synthesis; creates general design principles that capture the vision and critical concerns for a program.

  • Demonstrates mastery of the intricacies of interactions and dynamics in Agile teams. Demonstrates advanced understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles (e.g., Black belt certified). Guides new teams to adopt Agile, troubleshoots adoption efforts, and guide continuous improvement. Provides training on Lean / Agile. Drives elimination of inefficiencies in coding process. Teaches XP practices to others. Actively embraces new methods and practices that increase efficiency and effectiveness.

Business Acumen:

  • Evaluates technology to drive features and roadmaps. Maps technology trends to internal vision. Differentiates buzzwords from value proposition. Embraces technology trends that drive excellence beyond traditional practices (e.g., Test automation in lieu of traditional QA practices).

  • Balances value propositions for competing stakeholders. Recommends a well-researched recommendation of buy vs. build solution. Conveys the value proposition for the company by assessing financial risks and gains of decisions and return on investment (ROI).

  • Manages the process of building and maintaining a successful alliance. Understands and successfully applies common analytical techniques, including ROI, SWOT, and Gap analyses. Able to clearly articulate the business drivers relevant to a given initiative.

Leadership:

  • Influences through others; builds direct and "behind the scenes" support for ideas. Pre-emptively sees downstream consequences and effectively tailors influencing strategy to support a positive outcome. Uses experts or other third parties to influence.

  • Able to verbalize what is behind decisions and downstream implications. Continuously reflecting on success and failures to improve performance and decision-making. Understands when change is needed. Participates in technical strategy planning.

  • Proactively identifies and removes project obstacles or barriers on behalf of the team. Able to navigate accountability in a matrixed organization.
