As MISO’s Senior SQL Database Administrator, you will be responsible for designing, installing, monitoring, maintenance, security, and performance tuning of enterprise‑class databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Postgres. You will also be responsible for ensuring the availability, reliability, and optimal performance of both critical and non‑critical corporate data systems. You will play a key part in protecting and enhancing MISO’s data environment by proactively managing databases and implementing best‑practice standards. Additionally, you’ll collaborate closely with teams across the organization to understand their data requirements and ensure that corporate information remains accurate, secure, and trusted.
As MISO’s Senior SQL Database Administrator you will:
- Build, configure, and administer complex database platforms (primarily SQL Server and Azure SQL, with support for Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB in a highly available, mission‑critical environment).
- Proactively monitor database performance and system health using tools like SolarWinds; identify and resolve bottlenecks through advanced query tuning, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and physical database design improvements.
- Design, implement, and maintain high‑availability and disaster recovery solutions, including SQL Server Always On and clustering, ensuring stability and resilience for critical systems such as control‑room applications.
- Manage the full database lifecycle, including installation, configuration, patching (Windows and SQL), upgrades, backup/recovery, security hardening, compliance, and decommissioning.
- Automate administrative and operational tasks using PowerShell and best‑practice automation frameworks to improve efficiency and consistency.
- Collaborate with internal teams and application stakeholders to understand data requirements, ensure database reliability, and serve as a go‑to technical expert for SQL Server–related questions and support.
- Participate in a 24x7 on‑call rotation, providing responsive production support and ensuring ongoing stability across all supported database platforms.
To be successful as our Senior SQL Database Administrator, we are looking for the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, (or 10 years relevant work experience equivalency, preferred)
- At least six years of related Information Technology experience (required)
- Experience building, configuring, and administering complex SQL Server databases, including high-availability architecture such as Always On availability groups and clustering
- SQL Server on Azure
- PowerShell and automation best practices for efficient administration, patching, reporting, and operational tasks.
- Oracle Database exposure
Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $130,000 - $155,000 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.
