Job Description Summary:
Rocket Software is seeking an experienced Senior Software Test Engineer to join our mainframe analytics and performance product teams. In this role, you will be a proactive champion for product quality—shaping test strategy, extending our automated test capabilities, influencing product direction, and helping define an excellent user experience. You’ll work on technically deep products operating in complex IBM mainframe environments. Experience with z/OS, IMS or CICS, scripting languages, and test automation frameworks will provide a strong foundation. We also welcome candidates with backgrounds in mainframe systems programming, application development, or production support who are motivated to grow in a specialised and challenging testing domain.
High‑quality testing leads to high‑quality products. If you’re passionate about software quality and enjoy working closely with highly skilled engineers, we’d love to hear from you.
As a Senior Software Test Engineer, you will be a key contributor within our mainframe analytics and performance development teams. You will quickly develop a deep understanding of complex system behaviour and take clear ownership of product quality. You’ll help mentor junior team members, challenge quality assumptions, and collaborate closely with development and product partners to deliver robust, performant, and reliable software.
Responsibilities
Own product quality across the full lifecycle—from early design through release and ongoing supportability
Architect, extend, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks for mainframe-based analytics and performance products
Treat test automation as software engineering, applying sound design principles, reviews, and a focus on long‑term maintainability
Partner closely with developers and product owners to improve testability, usability, and system resilience
Validate not only functional correctness, but also performance, scalability, failure modes, user experience, and operational behaviour
Apply deep system knowledge to influence product design decisions before defects are introduced
Continuously evolve test strategy as system complexity and real‑world customer usage grows
Required Skills and Experience
Hands-on experience with IBM mainframe environments (z/OS)
Experience designing, building, or extending automated test systems or frameworks (not just writing individual test cases)
Proficiency in one or more scripting or programming languages commonly used for automation
Highly Desirable Skills and Experience
Background in mainframe systems programming or application development
Hands-on experience with IMS (applications, transactions, or system interactions)
Exposure to performance, capacity, or analytics software
Experience diagnosing production issues and feeding those learnings back into automated test coverage
Curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn deeply in a technically demanding domain
The successful applicant will bring strong technical judgement, an architectural mindset, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for working in a highly collaborative, technically deep engineering environment. You’ll also demonstrate a proactive approach to researching, evaluating, and applying new technologies, processes, and practices to continuously improve product quality.
